I am trying to figure out a simple problem. How do I figure out how many miles I got per gallon on the last tank of gas.

Gas was 1.56 per gallon , I drove 185 miles and I spend $23.00 on gas that day and the tank was bone dry
.. what I did was divide 23 by 1.56 and came up with 14 . then 185 divided by 14? and got 8
That cant be right I think I am just retarded and its to early to be up (stayed up drinking all night ack.. I think I burnt away all my brain cells last night. Help.. )

Where the fuck are you getting gas for $1.56????

If you are paying $2.56, then you are getting 20.6 mpg.

where did you find gas for $1.56 / gallon?   i presume you ment $2.56

distance traveled / # of gallons used = mpg

so if you drove 185 miles  and used 9 gallons of gas  ($23/$2.56=8.984375gallons)

185/9=20.5

~20.5 mpg

Next time, ignore how much you paid or cost per gallon and just keep track of how many gallons you used.

"Show the Work"

$23.00 divided by $1.56 = 14.74 gallons

185 miles divided by 14.74 gallons = 12.54 MPG
