I think it's actually spelled mandoline. That might help with Googling it.

I hate those holder things. I just use my hand. However, not being an idiot, I also have a good cut resistant glove that I wear. You have better control over the slicing that way.

KitchenAid makesd a very acceptable one. I've had one for about 3 canning seasons now and no problems.

We bought this one a few years ago. Thing works like a champ, is easy to clean and you get consistently sized slices. Works great for making au gratin potatoes.. We only use it when there's a bunch of slicing to be done, and will do julienne slices as well.
