The assault made news so once the jury was done with this piece of shit I thought a follow-up would be nice. The little shit is going to spend the rest of his life in prision likely due only to the compassion of the surviors who had the compassion that Raul Damian Martinez lacked.

COMPTON - A 24-year-old gang member from Moreno Valley was sentenced Thursday in Compton to 155 years to life for murdering an Iraq war veteran who was home on leave, and trying to kill the victim's pregnant wife and brother.

Raul Damian Martinez was convicted March 19 of first-degree murder in the Sept. 3, 2005, shooting death of 20-year-old Osiel Hipolito.

Martinez also was found guilty of the premeditated attempted murders of Hipolito's wife, Lizbeth Valdivia, and his 16-year-old brother, Jose Hipolito, and an attempted murder count involving the couple's unborn baby.

"Outrage is the only way to describe this kind of crime perpetrated against Osiel Hipolito and his family," said Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Andrew Kim. "It's absolutely tragic that this young man was safer aboard a ship off the coast of Iraq than he was in his own hometown, and I think the defendant received a just sentence."

The victim, who had been an Explorer Scout at the sheriff's station in Compton prior to volunteering for the Navy, had been due to return to the Persian Gulf for a second tour of duty in 2006.

Valdivia told of how the crime had ruined her life. She was shot in the abdomen and her daughter, Lynette, was later delivered by emergency cesarean section with a gunshot wound in one leg. Hipolito's brother was shot in the arm.

Hipolito was shopping with his family at an indoor mini-mall swap meet in East Rancho Dominguez when he was confronted by Martinez and another gang member, who asked where they were from, according to the prosecutor.

Martinez was arrested at his Moreno Valley home 11 days after the shooting.

Authorities are still looking for the man who was with Martinez, according to the prosecutor.
