Here's a short video of my GSD performing his latest trick. As the clip states, it took about 20 minutes for him to learn.

Sorry about the lousy filming. It was hard capturing all the components in one screen. I think next time I will set the camera up on the deck and film the action in the yard.

Anyhow, Magnum turns 2 in November. He's real protective inside the house. He's my first GSD and he's a blast.

Recently I've also taught him to jump into the back of my 95 Z71 without lowering the tailgate. That's a pretty high jump!

Hope you enjoy the clip.

BTW, the clip is work safe but other links on the site may not be.

I'd say that's an "okay" start.

When he opens it for you, then I'll be impressed.

Nope.  It's "German Shepard Dog".  Everyone and their dog knows what a German Shepard is.  But GSD owners seem to need to put dog at the end for some reason.

Actually, according to these guys it's "German Shepherd Dog" or "German Shepherd", also known as the Alsatian...

ETA:

From the above link:

It seemed that the very qualities that made the German Shepherd such an exceptional sheepdog could well be put to good use by government departments. .... Servicemen from the USA, UK, and the Commonwealth would see first hand the dogs bravery, intelligence, and steadfastness, ... In 1977, following numerous campaigns by breeders the name of the breed was changed back to the German Shepherd Dog by which it is known in the USA, Australia, and most other countries.....With the breed arriving in Britain mainly on the strength of its reputation as a war dog, its sterling qualities as a sheepdog were largely overlooked.

"Shepherd" is a contraction of sheep herd, as in the dog's original intended employment.

This is a Shepard, and he's not German:

Note to self: If I'm ever about to throw a hissy fit about something trivial like this, I should at least think about spelling it correctly.

Thanks for all the kind comments, and even for the hyper-anal-retentive one.

He also fetches the paper, sits, stays, speaks (woof), catches a treat off the end of his nose, etc..

He's lots of fun.

The video is still working for me. Yeah, he's grabbing a beer, but out of a cooler. I thought about teaching him to get one out of the fridge but I didn't want him opening the fridge and getting to the food in it!

Get him a doggie wallet and teach him to go to the liquor store for restock.

very cool trick.  I'm impressed.  Mine will only get the kids out of bed.......by their hair if they try to hide from him.....  it usually ends badly.
The kids are getting trained, though.   All I have to say is, "Gus, get'em up", and kids come flying out of the covers.

ahem... a german shepherd is a teutonic human who oversees a  herd of sheep.  A german shepherd DOG is said human's valuable tool to help control the wooly beasties.  DUH!

My dog knows how to roll onto her back for a belly rub, and how to stare at me with an 'injured/starving/depressed' look on her face, so I feel bad and give her some steak off of my plate.

That's about it.

My APBT (That is American Pit Bull Terrier) loves to go down the slide.  He has been doing that since he was about 3 months old.  It only took 5 minutes to teach him to run around, climb the steps and do it again.  But he does hate those corkscrew type slides.  He prefers the straight ones.

German Shepherd Dog is the Official name of the breed.
The only one to have 'Dog' in its title.

Some some snooty dog breeder a brazillion years ago came up with the name and so everyone is being "official" in saying it.  Big deal.  It still sounds stupid. But at least I'm glad I don't think you all are talking about a man named Adolf who really likes sheep.

Nah, I just bumped the thread up because I hated to see it go away.

I've been meaning to post another video of some of his other tricks but have been wrapped up with work lately.

I had an APBT (Colby variety) that climbed a tree after a cat he was chasing. I've got a Polaroid picture of it.

Seeing as how he grabs the can from the side, I wouldn't know.

It probably tastes like dog food and gnat butter if I had to guess.
