A man attempting run his way around the Bermuda Triangle in an inflatable bubble had to be rescued off the Florida coast after becoming exhausted.
Reza Baluchi had advertised his death-defying "zorbing" trip across the ocean to Bermuda, then Puerto Rico and back to southern Florida on his website.

It is unfortunate that he survived to further contaminate the gene pool.

He'll, even the hamsters quit that ball crap.

Maybe now he can have babies.

Has this fucker not stepped in a greenhouse?
I bet that damn thing was pretty warm about 2 minutes after launch.

Attention whore "thrill seeker" knew he would never make it but got the media attention he sought. They should send him a bill for his "rescue". Maybe a 150K rescue tab for fuel, wages and equipment usage would help him rethink his next spectacle that wastes taxpayer resources.

There is a difference between needing rescued from an accident and some dumb ass putting himself intentionally in harms way.

aw, someone steps in again to disprove Darwin.......

What a dumbshit

Actually, his plan would've been merely retarded and dangerous if it was to go from Florida to the Bahamas which may have been actually doable in his floating hamster ball, but fucking Bermuda?!?

There are plenty of 30' actual boats I wouldn't take for that trip

How does one who has only been here 10 yrs afford to do this?

From another story, same guy, Baluchi,

"The runner, who is also an activist, obtained his political asylum in 2003. He says that the goal of running is to “promote war peace.” According to Baluchi’s website, he designed the inflatable bubble and planned the mission to help raise money for children in need. The mapped out plan to achieve a successful mission while inside of the bubble was to run in the mornings, cool off at night, and to sleep in a hammock."

Our country has way too much spare time on it's hands.
Link Posted: 10/5/2014 7:43:17 PM EST
I don't understand why he quit. According to the FAQ on his own website, he was going to sleep on a hammock in the bubble, catch fish along the way, etc...

I wonder if he underestimated how much energy it would knock out of him to keep the bubble inflated and he found himself unable to keep it pumped up after the first day.

Some water and protein bars. Yea, that ought to get through a 3,500 mile trip.

wonder how humid it was in that thing?

Oh my god. This is the greatest story I've ever read. The music in his video is priceless.

How is this not sketch on a comedy show?

That guy is a wonderful example of the large tard wing of the ultra running scene. Some ultrarunners are total soul runners. I can dig that.

But the ultra wing of stunt-runners, oh man. Total kooks. Not good enough to excel at normal events, they invent the most absurd stunts in order to "excel" at something.

What a disgusting waste of resources. The sad part is other people were putting their lives on the line to rescue his.

Let's do some napkin mathematics...

The youtube video a few posts down stated that circumventing Hawaii took 6 days to do 250 miles. That's an average of 1.75 miles/hr. If he was doing a 3500 mile trip around Bermuda at that pace, it would take him, at best, 90 days. Let's assume that he can only paddle 12 out of 24 hours, and drifts the other 12 at 0; his best forward speed is therefore 3.5 mph.

But that is an average speed for a relatively small loop. Going in a straight line, the prevailing winds maps show that he would have been going into a headwind on the outbound trip to Bermuda. It wouldn't take much of a wind acting against that huge bubble surface area to make his velocity zero, or negative.

Additionally, the Gulf Stream current flows at 5.2-7 mph and is going right through that area. Even accounting for the fact it is at a 90 degree angle to his direction, he would still not be able to get enough forward speed to overcome it.

It's no wonder he only made it 70 miles. That is probably the line where the currents and winds become strong.

Hippies, pay attention to your high school physics. It may save you some embarrassment.

Well I'm glad he thought that plan through.

So this is what happens when you tell people they can do anything
Link Posted: 10/5/2014 8:29:04 PM EST
Actually, that makes sense. About why he stopped. Surely he had some kind of navigation aid.

If the Coast Guard doesn't bill this guy I'm driving to Cuba in my 49 Plymouth.

This is what I was thinking. The thermal result from the bubble could fry a fish.
