Port Orange man unaware he was shot in head
PORT ORANGE, Fla. (AP) — A man who woke up and found his head bleeding, drove to work and left a note for his boss before going to the hospital to find he had a bullet lodged in his brain, authorities said.

When Glen Thomas Betterley, 53, noticed the blood Thursday morning he asked his girlfriend if she had struck him. Emma Lorene Larsen, 65, said no.

Betterley went to Halifax Medical Center emergency room where he learned he had been shot in the forehead.

While Betterley was being treated, police called Larsen and heard a single gunshot. When investigators arrived at the home, they found Larsen dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot to the head.

A buddy of mine (and former co-worker) was a DEA agent who was often sent to Columbia to work the jungles related to coca eratication. He had been in several fire-fights in his numerious rotations "in country". During one river operation a boating accident injured him and some other DEA agents & their Columbian counter-parts. When getting Xrayed at a hospital after the accident it was discovered he had a piece of buck-shot in his head. Under the skin. Apparently from one of the fire-fights he had been involved in during previous operations.

Having known him for years... I was not surprised he had been shot in the head and did not know it! He was always a little "different"!

About 20 years ago I saw a police training video where an officer was detailing a struggle he had with an armed perp. They struggled and the officer ended up lying on his back with the perp sitting on the officer's chest, pointing a .38 at the officer's head. The perp fired, the officer thought he felt only muzzle bast. Officer starts swearing at perp, perp freezes, giving the officer the opportunity to knock the perp off of him and knock gun away. Officer then realizes blood is coming from his forehead. The perp had shot the officer in the middle of the forehead and freaked when the officer reacted by swearing, instead of dying. I think the .38 was loaded with LRN bullets.

In the original post, I suppose the victim could have been knocked out by the impact which is why he thought the GF ahd hit him

I think statistically speaking there is a significant number of persons who when shot in the head don't know it.........of course they are dead though.
