Desperation Excerpt Earlier this month, Verone (pictured), a 59-year-old convenience store clerk, walked into a Gaston, N.C., bank and handed the cashier a note demanding $1 and medical attention. Then he waited calmly for police to show up. He's now in jail and has an appointment with a doctor this week. Verone's problems started when he lost the job he'd held for 17 years as a Coca Cola deliveryman, amid the economic downturn. He found new work driving a truck, but it didn't last. Eventually, he took a part-time position at the convenience store. But Verone's body wasn't up to it. The bending and lifting made his back ache. He had problems with his left foot, making him limp. He also suffered from carpal tunnel syndrome and arthritis. Then he noticed a protrusion on his chest. "The pain was beyond the tolerance that I could accept," Verone told the Gaston Gazette. "I kind of hit a brick wall with everything." Verone knew he needed help––and he didn't want to be a burden on his sister and brothers. He applied for food stamps, but they weren't enough either. Then Verone hailed a cab to take him to the RBC Bank. Inside, he handed the teller his $1 robbery demand. "I didn't have any fears," said Verone. "I told the teller that I would sit over here and wait for police." The teller was so frightened that she had to be taken to the hospital to be checked out. Verone, meanwhile, was taken to jail, just as he'd planned it. Because he only asked for $1, Verone was charged with larceny, not bank robbery. But he said that if his punishment isn't severe enough, he plans to tell the judge that he'll do it again. His $100,000 bond has been reduced to $2,000, but he says he doesn't plan to pay it. But then, I'd rather have an Army medic straight out of AIT treat me than nobody at all. I don't have health insurance, either. I've thought about shit like this before. Fortunately, I'm only 47 an healthy. For now. But what about the day when I'm not...? |

Quoted: sad situation. Medical care in prison isn't exactly world class, BTW No. But a retired employee of mine found he had cancer the last time he was in. They had to take a kidney. In the end, his one year stent saved his life. He had no insurance and no other way to pay for it. If he hadn't have violated, he would have been eaten by cancer sitting at home with no health care. This is why we need free health care. |

ETA> and if he was really in that much pain he could have went to the emergency room to get "free" healthcare |

They'll kick him out on his own recognizance before having to deal with a medical bill. He'll have to do better than asking for a buck if he intends on them keeping him. The state doesn't have an incentive to keep him in top health and he'll discover health care in prison is about as bad as it gets.

Here is what I said in the other thread.
Well, if his conditions are not life threatening he's going to be disappointed.

It's really a sad situation that folks are suffering out there, but this guy decided to get himself in jail so that he could get the taxpayers to fix him. That's pretty much bullshit. It's a shame that people will see this guy as intelligent or heroic.

It's a shame that people will see this guy as intelligent or heroic. What course of action would you have suggested to this man? Me, I'd have just gone to the ER at the nearest church-operated hospital. Then plead poverty when the bill comes. Jail seems an extreme "solution" to his troubles. |

The entire article is another liberal sob story about why we all need socialized medicine. There are options. His family, charities, and churches like you mentioned. There's no reason why the taxpayers should foot the bill for his misfortunes. I volunteered for a Volunteers in Medicine and we helped out a lot of people in shitty situations. Medicine and surgeries were payed for with donations and volunteer time from nurses and doctors. These organizations are out there. Getting yourself in jail to have the taxpayers pay for court costs, living expenses, and medical treatment is no different than sleeping all day on your couch and then expecting the government to nanny you. |

poor guy Horseshit. He could have had medical treatment, he just didn't want to PAY for it. No one, and I mean NO ONE that truly needs medical attention gets turned away in the US. However, you might have to actually PAY for it which is a foreign concept among a certain percentage of the population. |

Oh, that's right, everyone ELSE should pay. Damn, forgot that. |

I don't buy it. Mexicans line up in the ER here and get treatment for all kinds or minor stuff, free.
He could have done the same. Probably wanted a few squares and hot showers too. Either this guy was ignorant, or he wanted more than just treatment. EMTALA makes us all pay for the illegals and freeloaders medical bills, and whoever else wants to wait in the ER. And Obama says medical bills are too high, all the while loosening already laughable restrictions on the border. I swear our Government is a tragic comedy. And EMTALA was passed with a BUDGET bill. 2. What are the provisions of EMTALA?
The essential provisions of the statute are as follows: Any patient who "comes to the emergency department" requesting "examination or treatment for a medical condition" must be provided with "an appropriate medical screening examination" to determine if he is suffering from an "emergency medical condition". If he is, then the hospital is obligated to either provide him with treatment until he is stable or to transfer him to another hospital in conformance with the statute's directives. 3. What is an "emergency medical condition"?
An attempt is made by the statute to provide a definition, but as usually happens, the legal definition leaves much to be desired. The determination is ultimately a medical one rather than a legal one. That is not to say that it is sheltered from review. As is the case with any medical decision, it must often be made quickly, with such information as is available, and is subject to critical retrospective review by physicians testifying as expert witnesses in the alien setting of the courtroom, in the event of litigation. http://www.emtala.com/faq.htm Basically, everybody gets treated for everything in the ERs I have worked in, even a common cold. Waiting the last time I was in Children's in Dallas was about 5 hours, I counted over 50 indigents and their children. Anybody who says illegal immigration has not had a massive impact on our medical system is an idiot, or deaf dumb and blind. |

This is why we should have free health care. FUCK THAT NOISE. I have a what will surely be a revelation for you. NOT EVERY LIFE IS PRECIOUS. In fact, life is pretty damn cheap in most parts of this world, and that includes sizable chunks of American urban settings. If you want an expensive car, you work to earn it. If you want a beach vacation home, you work to earn it. If you want top quality healthcare, you work to earn it. Other wise you take the aspirin and bandaide that is reserved for those who decided that high school was a drag, or those that can't stand "working for the man." |
