First rule of gun safety doesn't look like it was adhered to in this case.

"According to officials, Eugene Earl Martin, 22, was showing a semi-automatic handgun to friends when it fired and struck Morgan. A clip was not in the handgun at the time of the shooting, witnesses say. Martin was taken into custody and charged with involuntary manslaughter. He is being held at the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center pending bond."

Point it in a direction that is safe, that if it were to discharge would not likely result in harming anyone until the gun is rendered inoperable.

That's how I do it.

YOU may know that gun is not loaded. You just cleared and checked it. I watched you.

But when you hand it to me it IS loaded until I clear and check it myself. Just watch me.

Depends on whose rules. Jeff Cooper said all guns are always loaded but every NRA class their third rule is "always keep a gun unloaded until ready to use".

I say treat all guns as if they're loaded, knowing that a gun can actually be unloaded but unwilling to assume some asshole didn't change that equation when I wasn't looking.

Nice Steyr Hahn and Mauser. Always wanted to take a Steyr to quals just to see RO's face when he says "load 5 rounds" and you produce el stripper clip!

And the old man always taught me " treat every gun as if it's loaded"

I have a bunch of skinny little brushes that I squeeze between the bullets and stuff. That way I can still shoot while I'm cleaning, it's more tactical.

OMG!!! LOOK OUT!!! THERE'S A GUN IN MY SAFE THAT IS ABOUT TO KILL ME RIGHT NOW!!!!

Maybe we learned different "first rules," but the way I learned it was "Always treat every gun as though it is loaded until you, personally, verify it is cleared." If I pull out any gun, my first move is to unload and open the action. So long as that gun stays in my sight, I know that the gun is unloaded. If someone touches it, when I have it in my hands again, I ensure it is clear again. If nobody touches it, then I really don't see how it suddenly "became loaded."

If I pull out a bunch of guns for cleaning, say, 4 of them, and verify that they are unloaded, then place then on the cleaning table, well, you see where this is going.

None of this has anything to do with the article though. This is just a thread for some people to feel superior to other people because "I know better than you..."

I tend to agree with you, but I wouldn't ever get into this pattern. Some day, as you age, you will perhaps develop dementia. You can be as sure as shit it's unloaded, but maybe it's not.

I follow the first rule pretty religiously, and after a double check, I dry fire it in a safe direction. If a revolver, i fire it enough times to get a full cycle of the cylinder in a safe direction.

There was a local guy 3 weeks ago that was showing his friend his XD 40.

Took out the magazine, but had one in the chamber. Passed it to his 'friend' - who pulled the trigger, shooting the owner of the firearm through his leg, testicles, leg, hand and then couch.

I don't get it either. I treat all guns as if they are loaded. An unloaded gun by definition can not be loaded. You guys who say all guns are loaded are full of derp. How do you clean these always loaded guns ? Would you have a problem if you where pulled over in say nj and the cop arrested you for an unloaded gun that is locked in a case? By your reasoning the gun is loaded and the arrested would be valid since you are driving around with a "loaded gun".
