Seriously guys. If you hate clicking using the cold link method just get linkification, and RefControl add-ons for FF (get BOTH). Set up RefControl to Forge or Block (I do Forge). If you want to vote in the CNN polls you can just add a custom site (polls.cnn.com) and set the referrer to custom (http://www.cnn.com)

Clicking through a hot link shows referrer information... in other words, they would see a spike in traffic coming from arfcom.

If I were to guess... and that's all I can do at this point... it's to keep the target website from knowing what the referring website was.

However, if my internet-fu is correct, this only works if you open another browser that's on a different site and THEN paste the link.   If you go from one site to another without some kind of masking then the next site still knows the last page you were on.

Easyiest way to keep them in the dark is to go to "about:blank" and then paste the link.
