Are they good virtually indefinitely?

Or do they have a shelf life? A long shelf life I would think.

Just something Ive been wondering.

Whatever the shelf life is, it's under 12 years.

12 year old MRE's are waaaaaaay past prime.

There are some variables that goes into the shelf life of MRE's.

Here's the best site that I know of:

I would rather put together some canned goods instead of MREs. Not only would they last longer, they are waaaaay better than MREs.

12 years is nothing. i have ones much older then that and i eat them whenever i go hiking camping.

as long as the package is not broken or bulged, and it doesnt smell rotten when you open it, then its good to go.

Most places I have seen selling MRE's state a shelf life of around 7-8 years if stored in a cool place. If you want longer storage you might look into freeze dried food in cans, Some of it has a advertised shelf life of 25+ years

One must define:

Good...10 years or so if not temperature cycled

Edible...danged near forever

I ate some 4 year old MRE beef stew a couple of years ago.  It had been in my BOB in my truck toolbox which meant it had been frozen, thawed, heated to about 150 degrees, over, and over, and over.

It was great, tasted kinda like the "Dinty Moore" brand beef stew that you can get in a can.  The potatoes were crumbling a bit, that was the only difference noted.

I've got several cases in a closet in the house as a component of my home foodstores.  They are kept pretty much at 68-72 degrees constantly.  I don't ever plan to throw them out.

I have a case that is 8 years old and one that is 4 years old. Both are USGI. They have been stored in my basement which is dry and climate controlled.  3 quarters of my basement is a finished family room. The other part is used for storage and utilities. That's where my supplies are stored. Some of the contents of the 8 year old case, namely, the accessory packets took on a musty odor. I would not trust them. The entrees seem fine though.

Do they make MRE beer?

You know, in case of an emergency?

I saw an airman eat an MRE from the Persian Gulf War not too long ago.

He was alright.

Mmmm, powdered beer!

Sounds like hangover city after a 6 pack.
