MPD officer in critical condition
SEPTEMBER 11, 2010
A Montgomery Police Officer is listed as being in critical condition with life threatening injuries following two motor vehicle accidents Saturday.
Mayor Todd Strange said Corporal David Brown was working a funeral Saturday morning as part of the motorcycle escort when a vehicle in the procession pulled out, striking Brown. The motorcycle caught fire and Brown was ejected from the vehicle.
The ambulance carrying Brown away from the scene lost control, tipped over and a small fire was said to have occurred, according to Captain Keith Barnett, an MPD spokesman. Aside from Brown, the unit contained an assisting officer, two fire medics, an additional medical assistant and the driver, who are said to have suffered minor injuries, according to Strange.
Brown was transported to Baptist Medical Center South and at about 2:15 p.m. Strange reported he had “serious, significant” injuries and had been admitted into surgery. Others involved in the accidents had been transported to Jackson Hospital.
Dozens of officers and law enforcement personnel showed up at the hospital shortly after news of the accident had spread. Strange said it spoke volumes about the community.
“When one of ours goes down, we’ll be here,” said Strange.
Corporal Donnie Foster, who also works in motorcycle patrol, said he is praying for Brown that the injuries aren’t severe. He said motorcycle officers do this kind of work day in and day out, but he never expects what happened.
“Something like this really wakes you up,” Foster said.
