They are better than your average SMG because they are roller delayed blowback instead of being direct blowback. This removes a very heavy bolt zipping back and forth inside. It also gets you a closed bolt.
Apart from these huge benefits, they are tactically no different than any other SMG. |

I'll take the MP-5 over the MP-5k. That stockless MP-5k is a bitch to try to control. It's strictly short distance, bodyguard type work. The MP-5 is much more accurate and controllable.

Opinions on the MP5 vary considerably.
Personally I think it's a superb SMG. It's very accurate, highly controllable, and they tend to be very reliable. The lack of a bolt hold-open can be kind of annoying, and the long trigger pull isn't ideal for a long gun. The safety/selector lever isn't as ergonomic as it looks, leading a lot of SOP's that involve running the gun off safe once you've put it to fire. I've heard others who have a lot more time carrying MP5's than I do (generally in SOF units) who curse the MP5 as useless for anything but a diveweight. As SMG's go, I prefer the Colt's AR based ergonomics and bolt hold open...but the Colt is more difficult to control in full auto, most require mounting optics on the top of a carry handle, and the mags are a pain to load. |

It is one of the most fun machineguns you can ever shoot. Highly controllable. Very accurate. 9mm FMJ has NO problem penetrating, and in fact is criticized for over-penetration. Certainly the Cadillac of SMGs.
I've never noticed the K's muzzle blast. I'm more concerned with keeping my fingers where they need to be. That said, I've shot the K from a briefcase mod too.

I don't know if they still use it, but the SAS used the MP5 for quite some time. Made it pretty famous in the Embassy Siege. I know that Armed Police still use them, but they also use a lot of G36 rifles now. |

Personally, I wouldn't want to stand in front of one. Shot placement is key.
