"The weapon was not a favorite of infantry for its size, peculiar launch qualities and the limited effective engagement ranges. It was officially replaced in the US inventory by the FGM-148 "Javelin" though it continues life in storage, possibly for scrapping, future sale or emergency use."

Why aren't these being sent to Syria instead of TOW missiles?
Link Posted: 12/30/2015 5:13:20 AM EDT
Well, all the TOWs that Colonel North facilitated for Iran have not been used yet...maybe they should post on the EE. Humor aside, there is a shit ton of Warsaw Pact, French and Kraut ATGM on the open market and it is probably more expensive to test, validate and ship any remaining M47 inventory then to demil or bip it.

And...the Dragon and its batteries sucked ass.

I think a few of those old Dragon ATGMs ended up in Syria. Courtesy of the Golfer-In-Chief.

1977 mfg date.  Noooooice.   38 year old ordnance.  The warhead is probably 100%, but the missile propellant....eeeeeeeh.  Nope.

Heck! Most of the 550 and 750 gravity bombs we dropped in Desert Storm were Vietnam surplus.

Tritonol shelf stable iron bombs stored in open revetments for 50 years will still go boom.  Missles? Nope.  Hell, missles are fragile.  Example that comes to mind were the M72A1 LAW rockets dropped into Lang Vei.  Due to improper storage and rough handling,  most of them failed against the very lightly armored NVA crewed Chicom clones of the PT76.

Dragon Gunner checking in!  They were heavy and burned up the back of your neck. Still, when you smacked a tank with one, it was great fun!

Most of the MK82 bomb bodies I have loaded have had manufacture dates in the mid 70s.

I hated jumping a Dragon while at Bragg. That was without a doubt the most awkward thing in the world to get in the door with. Except maybe a mortar base plate, I'm glad I wasn't an 11C.

I read a lot of books about VN way back and it seemed that those things were a pieces of shit in general. They were always misfiring or duds was the impression I got.

Same here. My formal MOS was 11BC2. I qualified Expert on the Dragon. After you got over the initial blast (It really did produce purple flames around you) it was lots of fun to fly. POP POP POP POP POP POP POP POP. I could keep on popping, but got tired of typing it.

Heavy bitch though. And setting up the thermal unit was stupid.

It's all good.

We fired WWII era 105 in training in the late 90s.

Just a couple years ago, we fired some obsolete 105 RAP from the early 70s/late 60s.  Kind of funny to fire "obsolete" stuff that still has the X prefix.  Shit was actually pretty damn accurate in Rocket On mode.

Against Warsaw Pact forces, the Dragon gunner's only hope of survival as the missile 'pop-pop-pop'ed to the target was that the TC was too drunk (or busy) to shoot back down the wire.

Missile flight time was slow and the gunner had to keep tracking the target - and hope the missile hit a tank before a 152mm battery did a TOT on him (and that the wire didn't break).

I've seen that.  Or nose dive at 50 meters and shut down OP5 while EOD came out (live fire).

Remember shooting 1950s production M4 (not A1) white bag in the late 90s.   Most of it worked pretty well a few cans had crumbling powder bags other than those grade 4 we only had to do a large minus MV correction because the BCS did not have take into account the amount of observed MV loss we found when calibrating

The M202 Flame Assault Shoulder Weapon - "FLASH" - also had a nasty habit of dripping burning rocket fuel down the back of the firer, so there was a safety of use out on it and we never live fired it in the 82nd or the 1st ID.  Did that ever get fixed?  I assume so since there is a M202A1.

I made the mistake of qualifying expert with the Dragon in 1987 or 88 and ended up carrying one for a while.  As others have said, the first time you fire one, the back-blast is an enlightening experience.  It was a very odd and cumbersome weapon system and I was glad when I got moved to M-60 gunner.

I bet you know a lot of misguided children that would enjoy avalanche control duties.

In fact I bet they could make the mountains completely devoid of snow if you let them.
