Check the bore for pitting.  corrosive ammo was used in the ww2 days, i've heard.

Don't worry about the wood too much most of the wood isn't that great on those old rifles.

Check the throat errosion and barrel wear.

Are you going to CMP?  They have some sweet deals there.

Are you looking for shooters or collectors?
I would get the DCM/CMP M1 Garands they are the best deal in town.
