I'm thinking of getting one of the above,I really have no exp with either.I do have 2 AR10's but I'd like something different, the M1A and the FAL both appeal to me,but both is not an option. What are the highs and lows of each rifle?

FAL is a pistol grip rifle

M1A is not

FAL has slightly cheaper mags

Both Suck for mounting optics

M1A has better irons

both are FUCKING AWESOME

I own an M1A

Get both everyone should own the rifle with the title "right arm of the free world" (I am!)

Don't forget the PTR-91

Personally, i think the FAL is ugly as sin. I don't care how great it is, it's fugly to me. The PTR-91 is a clone of the G3. You can get a CETME for about $400 but it's hit or miss... Some are great, some suck.

I got the Socom 16  with a JAE-100 stock and a CETME for kicks. The Socom kicks ass, but the CETME is fun too.

Personally, I think the only advantage of the FAL over the M14 is the gas regulator.

I like FALs alot, and think the M14 is the better rifle.

2 M1A's and 0 FALS here.

You can guess my answer.

But I've never owned a FAL and the M1A's haven't failed me yet.

FAL Carbine FTW!
It's a no BS rifle, fun to shoot and low maintenance.

I pretty much consider any rifle without a pistol grip an antique.

M1a owner with 3,000 rounds down the pipe.

I traded a few shots with a fal owner. I LIKE the Fal for repeated shots

I like the trigger on my M1a better along with the sights

So I take it the DSA FAL would be the favorite as FAL's go?I know about the Fulton M14's and a few other high end M14 type rifles, but if I went that route I'd have to go with the Springfield. This is a tough one.

Older Springfields...Older with REAL parts.

isnt' there some sort of mag commonality between the AR-10 and M1A? That would be a nice feature.

The M-14's gas system is self-adjusting; the FAL's needs to be manually adjusted.

My main beef with the FAL are the sights and the fact that I can't use a shooting sling with it.  Personally I really like both rifles considerably.

FALS are easier to clean and have a nice adjustable Gas System. They are also CHEAPER than an M1A as are their Magazines.

HOWEVER...having given the FAL its due...the M1A shoots better. Has Nicer Sights that allow you to exploit the range of 7.62 NATO and hit what you are shooting at much farther away than a FAL can.
Also..the M1A has a Nicer Trigger pull than the Gritty FAL trigger. AND the M1A points nicer when you throw to your shoulder to pop off a shot.
The balance of an M1A is very nice.

I also find that the recoil on an M1A is more pleasant than on a FAL.

I own 3 M1As and 4 FALs and am well acquainted with each one.

Now...having said all of that..everyone is different. So...get the one that YOU like best for YOUR NEEDs.

The gen 1 AR10 mags were modded M14 mags if I remember correctly, the Armalite Gen 2 mags are built specifically for the AR10.

FAL.  Para or a standard stock with an 18" barrel.  Put a DSA scope mount on it, add Aimpoint and go.  I love my M1A, but if I had to pick only one .308 rifle to keep it would be my DSA para, followed very closely by my 18" Argentine FAL with the full stock.  Having owned both an HK91 and a PTR91, I would NOT pick one of those over the FAL or the M1A.  If you go M1A, I'd look for an older one with GI parts rather than a current production Springfield Armory.

The DSA is the best FAL better handling than the M1A1 and can be set up for yard ape sized shooters like me.  M1A1 is a good rifle also, can be made to be very accurate, stock tends to be on the short side.  I prefer the HK91, with a collapsing stock they pack very nicely, and are the least dirt sensitive.

HK91
FAL
M1A1

.....my list in that order.

I would say try each one out first if you have the chance.
Both are obviously great rifles, but for me, the M1A is a lot more comfortable in my hands.
Either way, you can't lose. But again, if I had to vote, M1A all the way.

No one mentioned, but the FAL has an adjustable gas port so that you can only get enough gas to cycle the action. The M1A has none. I suggest you shoot both and select one. Can't go wrong with either rifle.

My preference is for the M14 in it's classic configuration.  It is my best iron shooter and has a USGI TRW barrel.  I keep it simple with a USGI fiberglass stock and a pristine USGI walnut for show.  All those new stocks may be functionally better, I just can't get past how ugly they look.  The JAE-100 is the exception but you pay dearly in $$$ for that.   Last year I added an Ulitmak M8 rail, Aimpoint Comp M2, and Aimpoint low mount just to modernize it.  This setup gives me absolute cowitness with the irons

I've owned eight FALs (five of them preban factory guns) in my lifetime.  While nice, the adjustable gas regulator on the FAL was never an issue for me.  Once set I never had to touch them.  Every other military style semi I've owned didn't have this feature so why is this a decided advantage?  The FAL is heavier.

As for HK style rifles, I've owned factory HK91, HK93, and HK94.  I never liked cleaning them or disassembling the bolts.  Haven't owned any in years and don't plan on ever again.  The HK's advantage?  I think it the most robust of the guns mentioned here.

I agree with the post above. I've owned most all of them too. HK's are my 1st choice, but an M1A is it's own beast.

Here are two. 1st is from August and the 2nd from September, and I added another one for you on the next page from October

I have both.  4 FAL's and 1 M1A.

Love both models.   Many others here have hit the high points.

FAL -

  • Easy to clean

  • Better ergonomics - pistol grip, easy to take down, etc

  • cheap mags

  • huge surplus of parts available

  • optics mounting is easy....buy the extreme mount from DSA...and you have a rail that is solid on your FAL

  • adjustable gas system - NOT fragile like the M1A is

M1A

  • mounting optics is a pain

  • fragile OP rod that is costly to replace

  • much better sight system than the FAL

  • trigger pulls are / can be better than the FAL

  • generally more accurate

I love both...have 2 FAL paras, 1 FAL 50.00, and a FAL G1...for M1A have the standard model....all have been excellent

If I was running out the door and had to grab just one...FAL Para

Same here.

I personally do not care a lot for the FAL. It is okay. Crappy sights and not nearly the same balance and feel off-hand as the M-14 (marginal typical trigger––but that varies).

Others feel just the opposite, I suspect that is why there are so many of each!
