My next one is due from the factory in 2012. Ordered sometime in 2007 from what I recall.
1. RMK #14 with single #3 nickel silver hilt, black micarta one-finger handle, thumb notches.
2. RMK #3 stock
3. RMK #3 with 7" blade, India stag handle and nickel silver hilt. Compare the nickel silver hilt on this #3 to the stock #3 above, which has a brass hilt.
Quoted:
I'm hung up on using one as a hunting/survival knife, leaning toward green micarta handle, maybe a 14 or 16 with saw back in SS.
As an owner of a #14 and who has taken a survival class, I would not recommend it for those purposes. Don't get me wrong, I love my Randalls but they are not optimized for survival purposes. I would recommend instead a Swamp Rat Howling Rat LM (HRLM) or an Ontario RAT5 (or RAT3) as a much more practical survival knife.
The blade of the #14 is just far too long for most typical survival purposes. I would recommend a maximum five inch blade, no longer. Further, the double hilt just plain gets in the way. You'll notice I had my #14 made with a single hilt in order to try and overcome this disadvange (in addition to adding the thumb notches), but even Randall's single hilt gets in the way of putting your thumb on the spine of the blade so you don't have as much leverage for detail cuts.
Also, the #14 does not have a good pommel for hammering; if you ask for the Duralumin buttcap it will not be strong enough to hammer. The pommel of my #14 is mostly micarta, which will NOT stand up to pounding. The HRLM and the RAT3 both have exposed pommels which are great for hammering (the RAT5 not so much –– it's one of those stupid "skull crusher" pommels that look tacticool but have no practical use whatsoever).
Last, you won't have to wait five years and spend $400 for a Swamp Rat HRLM or Ontario RAT. Pony up $90 and you can have a new RAT3 shipped to your door within two weeks.
