We did this yesterday

Depends on the individual store.
Link Posted: 6/24/2017 12:16:32 AM EDT
Link Posted: 6/24/2017 12:16:33 AM EDT
I go to both. Not really loyal to either.
Link Posted: 6/24/2017 12:18:42 AM EDT
Home Depot back to the days when it was Home Club.
Link Posted: 6/24/2017 12:19:03 AM EDT
I shop at both but I like lowes better.
Link Posted: 6/24/2017 12:21:24 AM EDT
Home Depot

Lowe's is for housewives and interior decorators.
Link Posted: 6/24/2017 12:21:42 AM EDT
I shop at both, all over the south and central US. They both pretty much suck, but in general Home Depot sucks less (and their prices tend to be lower).

Lowes is a store designed to sell stuff to women and people who don't know what they're doing.

Home Depot is more of a supply house.

ETA beat while typing
But glad this is common knowledge.
Link Posted: 6/24/2017 12:22:35 AM EDT
I go to both because they give Military discount.
Link Posted: 6/24/2017 12:23:37 AM EDT
The Depot sells Leviton + they no longer carry die cast...

...the WP compression are nice but they need to move toward insulated throat
Link Posted: 6/24/2017 12:24:22 AM EDT
Menards
Link Posted: 6/24/2017 12:26:20 AM EDT
If you blind folded me and placed me in one of the two stores I don't think I could tell you which store I was in without reading the signage.

They're damn near the same thing.
Link Posted: 6/24/2017 12:27:28 AM EDT
I feel more relaxed in a Lowes.
Orange color everywhere in a store rubs me the wrong way.
Average Depot customers I see, I figure you're more likely to see a fight in a Home Depot parking lot than a Lowes parking lot.
Link Posted: 6/24/2017 12:30:17 AM EDT
There's only a Lowes around here, no HD. I think I need to start patronizing the Ace that I believe we have.
Link Posted: 6/24/2017 12:30:45 AM EDT
Home Depot has a better selection of tools/hardware, more geared towards contractors, stores typically dirtier due to this. Lowe's is more geared towards the soccer mom, better appliance line up, stores typically a little cleaner.

*These are generally true company wide, may vary some on a store by store basis. Both used to employ semi-retired pros, particularly in the plumbing/electrical departments who wanted something to do for 20hrs a week at ~$20 an hour. Those guys are almost entirely gone replaced by random people smart enough to pass a drug test and dumb enough to take the job for $10 an hour.

I think Lowes has better quality stuff (appliances fixtures), I will go to HD for Cree LED bulbs.

Agreed, we have both side by side here and the depot is a fucking dump.

I remember Hechinger

They're very much like the other, but Lowes seems a little more home appliance-y while Home Depot seems a little more hardware-y.
Link Posted: 6/24/2017 12:45:37 AM EDT
I like kobalt tools from lowes. They have some spectacular sales from time to time.
Link Posted: 6/24/2017 12:54:34 AM EDT
I usually go to Home Depot because it's closer, but I got to Lowe's for wood because it's straighter.
Link Posted: 6/24/2017 12:55:32 AM EDT
Depends on if I need to pick up a couple Mexicans to help with whatever project I'm doing. Lowe's doesn't have Mexicans and Home Depot does.
Link Posted: 6/24/2017 12:57:23 AM EDT
They are equidistant from me.  I like having a few options.

home depot only if it's close and I'm desperate and yes depending on the need, I'd go to Ace hardware or Home hardware before HD

They both suck, but in different ways.

I use both.

Then when I can't find the right fastener, I head over to Marshall's Hardware. I can usually find it there.

Here they're across the street from each other. Flip a coin. But the Lowes generally has better prices.  And their online order pickup works, unlike HD.

I don't care what color the big box store is- I just need supplies.  Ace, True Value, Menards, Orchard Supply, Home Depot, or some random mom & pop- whichever is closest and has what I need.
Link Posted: 6/24/2017 2:28:45 AM EDT
I voted Home Depot, it's a lot closer.

I hardly fix anything and I'm not handy but I've spent a crap ton there since I finally bought a house.

usually?

Fellow San Diegan I see.

Lowes has some of the most unfriendly employees I've ever encountered. Most of them seem like they go out of their way to avoid talking to you.

While at nearly every Home Depot I've been too, their guys are walking around actively seeking out customers to assist.

I've had the opposite experience.  I've tried online pickup at both chains a couple of  times.  Home Depot went alright.  Both times it was a royal goatfuck at Lowes.  They either didn't have the shit pulled (even though I got the message that it was ready) or it was the wrong stuff.  In both cases they were beyond slow in unscrewing it.  Never again.
Link Posted: 6/24/2017 3:29:05 AM EDT
Home Depot.

If I need help in Lowe's it takes me 10 minutes to trek half the store to find someone, who can page someone, who may eventually show up at the isle I need help on.

Home Depot, I get asked every five minutes if I need help or if I'm finding everything ok.

That's not hyperbole either.

Is nobody here aware of the fact home depot  Co founder Ken langone led the Republicans for reelection of cuomo effort.  That fucking orange store gets no more of my $$$.  Fuck them.

I've had less problems with HD's site to store, except at one store around me, they can't keep order pullers on staff at all. I will rarely set foot in Lowes anymore unless I absolutely have to, typically it's HD, Tractor Supply (especially now that I have one closer than either big box place), or the local "Do it Best" place here in town. I try to avoid the last one because they don't have lumber and their prices are high, but they often have stuff the others don't. We are getting a new McCoys locally, though, and I have always preferred their lumber.

Home depot is closest, that's where I go most of the time

Lowe's.

The folks there try not to laugh too hard when I go in looking for something and not knowing what it's called, where it is located, or how to install it.
Link Posted: 6/24/2017 8:50:58 AM EDT
Whichever one is closer at the time.

Back in Ohio the Home Depot was a lot better than the local Lowes.  Better selection, better workers, just an all around better experience.  Now here in North Alabama I have to give the edge to Lowes.  I still go to Home Depot they have a better selection of lumbers and a few other things but I would rather shop the Lowes around here than the Home Depot.

I work for home depot, so ya.... going on 11 years currently in a  management position

Home Depot has always been called Home Depot from day 1

The store manager sets the over all feel for the store, you have great mangers and not so great managers.
