Threads about losing pets and gaining pets recently got me thinking... as I look at my sleeping dog and snoozing cats... I don't think there's a simpler, truer love than what you feel for your pets. Look at what a mess us human beings make out of loving each other.... and look at how wonderful animal love is. What's the worst thing a dog can do to upset you? Pee on your floor, chew your fancy shoes?

Consider this thread an arfcom toast to the animals that we love....

And those we have loved.

Agree 100%. The love I have for my dog Buddy is unmatched.

When I lose him, I don't know what I'll do.

I have a cat that I got 10 years ago tomorrow

she belonged to my best friend, who said to me as he was walking out the door to go on a business trip

"hey, look after my cat while I'm gone"

He died on that trip

we were best friends for 20 years.  I still miss him

I am not sure what I will do when his cat ("Pretty Little Girl Kitty") passes.  I am sure it will be tough.

I left the cats for 6 days over thanksgiving.

Anyone who thinks that cats don't care about people should have heard the meow lashing, and followed clinging, that ensued when I returned.

I just took these pics, they're both already passed out for the night which explains the look

I love these dogs more than anything and I'll do whatever it takes to protect and help them.

As I type this I have one in my lap and one on the box next to me... not sure where my girl cat went...

Buddy:

My boy, might as well be my son. He's been in my life longer than any friend I currently have. He's approaching 8 now.

Peanut:

Newest addition to the family, he's 9 months now and pure hell. But he loves his Daddy.

Scarlette:

She's my sister's cat that I've adopted now that she's moved overseas. A little princess but she rules the roost. She's also 8. And apparently I have no decent pics of her handy...
Buddy and Scarlette have always been there. I've left them for long periods of time over the years... school, OSUT, deployment etc. But they never forget me and always love me. I have yet to meet a real person (other than blood) who I can say the same for. A pet's love is an amazing and simple thing and we're all the better for it.

My ladyfriend once asked me if it was her or the dog which I would choose.

Let's just say she didn't like the way I answered, and I was "sleeping on the couch" as it were.

Our expectations are somewhat lower for animals and they regularly exceed them in ways that amaze us.   People less so, maybe because their lives are so complicated......compared to the cat or dog.

Panther (RIP):

And a big ol' RIP Hickory:

She was an amazing dog, I swear she knew exactly what I was thinking most of the time.  Had a heart the size of a horse's, along with hypothyroidism.  $220/mo for meds when she was diagnosed at around 3 years, and the vets didn't thing she'd make it past 5 years.  I guess she loved us too much, she stayed with us till 13 and a half.  She used to carry around that little PoundPuppy toy in her mouth like it was her own

I'll see them again someday

I lost my girl Molly a year and a half ago, and not a day goes by that I don't think about her and miss her.  She was a great friend.

I especially think of her when we get snow like we have the past few days.  She loved to play in the snow.

It could be 30 below outside and I could find Levi lying in the snow happy as anything.

I used to think my love for my dogs was the greatest, then I had children. Real human children, not silly pets people call children.  If you don't have real human children the only way I can explain it is its like when you think you are in love with your first childhood crush.  Puppy love if you will, that is the love for pets. Then as you grow older and find what true love is, that is what having children is like.  What I am trying to say is the two aren't even comparable.

Even a damn fish. I'm trying to figure out how to make sure my damn fish lives a long life. It's so cute when he gets all excited when I come into the room, hoping I'll stun a shiner for him... He's outgrowing his tank, though.

Fish are the only pets I will allow myself to have right now. I am thinking of getting a turtle when my current fish dies. I gotta do baby steps up to a cat or a dog.
