The 7.62mm cartridge is too long for the magazine.
You need to buy the complete gun, an Armalite AR-10 |

Here are a couple links to manufacturers of .308 AR style firearms. None will work with an AR-15 lower though. They make a .50BMG upper; why not make a similar one for .308? [:)]

You could do the same for a .308, but most folks would want it to be a semi auto. The magazine well isn't long enough to accomodate the round. Probably most any round with an AOL equal or less than the 5.56mm would work. |

Probably most any round with an AOL equal or less than the 5.56mm would work. Earthlink so too, as long as its MSN wasn't too wide. |

Theoretically a .308 upper could be made for AR15 lowers, but it would be a BREN Style or side feed.

This post got me to thinking. Would it be that hard to design an AR15 upper that used AR10 parts? Rotate the bolt 90 degrees clockwise, feed from the left with a FAL magazine (kinda like a Sten or Sterling), ejects cases through the magwell on the lower. The gas tube would run down the right side of the barrel instead of the top.
