if you eloped, do you wish you hadn't?

and if you had the "all-out" affair, do you wish you eloped?

Just the two of us on a beach in the Bahama's

We have discussed it since, and still agree we would not of wanted it any other way.

I'm from Texas and she's from Utah. We were married in Utah then had two receptions.... we've agreed eloping probably would've been better... two receptions were CRAZY!

Las Vegas. Just us, married in a court yard of some hotel. My wife was happy, everything went well except the cake was not what she ordered.
Less participants the better.

Big weddings are a WASTE of money. Mine was realtively small............aBOUT 150 GUESTS and that was about 145 too damn many
Link Posted: 8/11/2005 3:27:38 PM EDT
Wouldnt change a thing......was the best day of my life by a country mile.
Link Posted: 8/11/2005 3:27:44 PM EDT
Ours was simple. 80 friends & family. Church wedding, dinner afterwards with drinks on us.

Whole thing cost < $5k which we paid out of pocket.

No limos, 1 groomsman & 1 MOH. Rent-a-preacher, quaint rent-a-church and a DJ afterwards at the reception.

We did splurge $900 for the string quartet at the ceremony. Best money spent IMO.

Honeymoon was my grandfather's bug-out house at the Lake of the Ozarks. Had a shower, boats, guns & cooking appliances and electricity.

I would post the video but everyone would fall asleep.
I was scared shitless not at the thought of getting married but being in front of all those people
Link Posted: 8/11/2005 3:31:02 PM EDT
i think i would like to elope...get married and honeymoon for about a week or so, and then throw a big BBQ for friends and family when we got home.

Link Posted: 8/11/2005 3:33:08 PM EDT
I had the full blown affair, in Ireland. Bagpiper, the whole works. Worth every penny of my father-in-law's money. No regrets.
Link Posted: 8/11/2005 3:34:07 PM EDT
I had a church wedding, and a banquet afterwards no regrets, just that I wish I could've done it earlier in life.
Link Posted: 8/11/2005 3:35:24 PM EDT
Lost a dare...did it the next morning at the courthouse with my bestfriend and her boyfriend. that was almost 5 years ago....still going strong
Link Posted: 8/11/2005 3:36:37 PM EDT
We had a pretty big wedding with well over 100 guests. It was great!
Link Posted: 8/11/2005 3:38:30 PM EDT
I don't wish we eloped because we got a lot of money as wedding presents and we needed it to fund our honeymoon.
Link Posted: 8/11/2005 3:46:31 PM EDT
A little but not much. We had the works...but...almost didn't.

Flash back...

Me waiting for my at the stationares to finalize our invitations.

She's half an hour late.

Finally, she shows up balling her head off. I calm her down enough to get the story.

We choose smallish invitations, and we decided to go all or nothing on the names. So everyones name was going to be on it or just mine and hers. Well, to that her mom said "If I'm spending over $10,000 on this wedding my name is damn well going to be on it."

My soon to be bride almost then and there considered saying "Okay then...we're only a few hundred dollars in deposits into this so lets cancel it all and we'll get married in London, England (our honeymoon destination) . Anyone who wants to show up, can."

My responce was "it's not our fault she had to get a divorce and then get remaried and decide to hyphenate her damn name".

Luckly everything fit.

Everything about our wedding was great. Wouldn't have changed a thing.

I wish we could re-live that day, in all it's glory.

ETA: October 3, 1998. A beautiful fall day.

We had a big wedding with over 500 people.
Good food, music, lots of family and friends.
Everybody had great time.
I would do it same all over again.

Our parents didn't have to prepare anything... they just had to be there.
We took care of everything including some airline tickets... all paid out of our pocket.

Link Posted: 8/11/2005 3:48:14 PM EDT
Didn't elope, and the wedding wasn't that big. I wanted to elope secretly, keep it a secret, then have the big wedding for the family, and the real one would only be for us......wife wouldn't go for it....
Link Posted: 8/11/2005 3:52:55 PM EDT
Did the big wedding thing. Still married 21 years later. I would have just gone to Vegas and had a simple BBQ when we got back. The only one's that had a good time were the guests. We both agreed we were very uncomfortable. It wasn't about us, "it was the event".

What do I wish about my wedding...?

I wish I'd have had the courage to stay broken up with her 6 months after we met. Instead, the spineless me got back together, stayed with her for 6 years, felt so guilty about not marrying her that I proposed, and stayed with her for another 6 years in a bad marriage before finally growing a pair and leaving.

Sorry you asked?

I think that is the problems with most weddings... it is about the "event" where you two are just an prop.

In our case we paid for the whole thing so we planned it the way we wanted done with no outside input. It was at our church, at our wedding hall, we had "our kind of music", food that we liked, family and friends that we wanted to invite, etc. Basically it was a big party we always wanted so we had fun.

Our backyard, about 30 people all close friends and family. Drank too much, smoked too many cigars, my best friend and best man flew in from NC to sing at the reception with his brother. Other long time friend flew in from Reno. Honeymoon in Vegas, won $860 on the $5 slots, had a great time.

Big country church wedding, the whole nine yards.

Preacher came in with his fly unzipped (black suit/white underwear), granny almost had a stroke.

Ushers showed up drunk.

Bro in law put fine ground black pepper in A/C ducts on getaway car. I still want to kill him for that. June 19th was HOT.

Honeymoon trip was only 30 miles away. Flat broke, she no workie, me $5.23 per hour.

Me 21, she 16. Rest is history.

Been 23 years since that day.

Danny

We got married in Vegas, just me the wife to be and a rentawitness. After the "ceremony" we went to a indoor range where I rented a F/A 9mm AR, so the day wasn't a total loss She got what she wanted and so did I, just wish I could have kept the AR.

I wish that I'd have taken my Best Man's car keys he offered right befor the cerimony. Then he offered to cover my escape!

After being divorced from her for 20 years, he still is my best friend.

I'll do it again one of these days, it was just THAT particular marriage
Link Posted: 8/11/2005 10:23:01 PM EDT
Just got back from wedding/honeymoon (literally).

The wedding was just the fiancee and I, NOBODY else. It was awesome. (not inexpensive, however )

Then, about 10 days later, we had a party/reception for a bunch of our friends, with no family.

In about three weeks we are having another party, where family (and some other friends) are invited.

Works out well, and my wife gets to wear her dress three times!

I wished I'd caught a bad case of death. Or deployed to some 3rd world crap hole and taken an IED to the face.

It would have been much less painful than the ensuing divorce and 20 years of hell after the divorce. Oh, if I'd lived past death or the IED, I'd be about 100+K richer now.

If I'd have off'd her when I wanted, I'd be out of prison by now.

Hookers are by far the cheaper option.

No offense to the institution of marriage.
Link Posted: 8/11/2005 10:37:17 PM EDT
My wedding was me, my wife, my parents, and a judge. Anything else is bullshit "tradition".
Link Posted: 8/11/2005 10:37:56 PM EDT
I would have run like hell.

I should have listened to her brother, who's exact words were: "I love my sister but she's a complete fucking cunt."

Boy, was he right.
