I was helping my grandpa's neighbor clear some stuff out of his barn today and spotted an old ammo can buried under a bunch of crap. I asked him what was in there and he had no clue, so we opened it up, and in the can were four m18 smoke grenades and a training frag grenade of some kind! I thought they were awesome so he told me I could have em, I offered him money but he refused.

I don't know anything about them so any info on them would be cool. I'm not planning on selling them but a value of some sort would also be nice. Thanks guys!

That may be a live training grenade. It has a spoon safety. Careful

any experts here?

Aren't those fuzes classified as DD's now?

Smokes are legal. as is the inert frag. Cool find op. thay go for about $75 each now days, keep them somewhere cool and dry.  and they will last a while. being said, they do look a bit old.

On the training grenade, unscrew the fuse from the body.  You should be able to tell if it is spent.  Or to put it this way, if after you unscrew it, you find an intact metal tube then the training fuse is still live.

I heard they were legal to have but not legal to sell.

       Whatever sense that makes.

Cool, thank you very much. I've been trying to read up on them but keep finding mostly airsoft/paintball crap

I'm gonna get a case for them and hang them on the wall by my work bench.

It's been 20+ years since I have handled smoke or training grenades, but in the photo it looks like the fuse body on the training grenade has started to corrode away? Is that what I am seeing?

The smokes are perfectly legal to own, sell, and buy.  There is not portion of them classified as DD.  There was a letter sent to ALS Industries several years from the BATFE asking them to stop selling to civilians, no rule or law was or is in place preventing the ownership, sale, or purchase of these items.  You can still find them but normally will need to prove you are either military or law enforcement.  I know noting of the frag, last time I picked up what I thought was an inert round (20mm) it turned out it wasn't, after I had tossed it into my nylon backpack.

The grenade is, as said, a trainer

I'm betting it's still a live "fuze" as the thumb saftey is still there, and he ears aren't pinged up on the spoon

If you decide to play with that, don't pull the fuze and mess around with it, it's basically a m80 in an aluminum sleeve, it can throw small pieces of the sleeve like frag

First,

the one on the far right looks like it might be ready to set itself off. Those smokes can get hot, so I wouldn't store that somewhere valuable.

The training grenade, there's been one arrest that I've posted. And, that was for just the fuze section, there weren't any charges attached.

With the shape that fuze appears to be in, I'd be very leery of trying to unscrew it. Look for a hole in the bottom. If there is no hole, pitch that thing in a deep ocean. If there is, look for a short tube projecting downward from the fuze. If no, it is probably done. If you see it, it is potentially live.

Don't listen to a single person telling you stuff about colors. COLORS MEAN NOTHING. EVER. There are (and not saying this is your case, OP) too many hacks that like to try and rearm training stuff with not enough knowledge and experience. I've been interested in this kinda thing since I was a kid, and I'm 44 now. I have trouble telling between a training fuze and a fuze for a full up frag sometimes. Spoons (bouchons) can be swapped or painted.

All I am saying is these would be poor examples for you to put on your mantel. Good luck.

There IS a hole in the bottom of the frag and the fuse is spent
