Troopers begin patrolling Logan with machine guns

BOSTON (AP) An elite state police unit armed with submachine guns began patrolling Logan International Airport at full strength for the first time on Thursday in a move airport officials said would bring peace of mind to the traveling public.

Officials said the special Anti-Terrorism unit is the first permanent security force stationed at a U.S. airport to be armed with submachine guns.

''It's a deterrent and I think it's a comfort for the travelers,'' said Phil Orlandella, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Port Authority, which operates Logan.

National Guard soldiers deployed temporarily at Logan after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks toted the weapons. The two planes that destroyed the World Trade Center took off from Logan.

The guns are MP-5's with 30-round clips and a two-round burst capacity, meaning two shots are fired automatically with one push of the trigger. The guns, designed for accuracy indoors, have noise suppressor units to minimize alarm among travelers if they're used.

Members of the state police troop stationed at Logan received intensive training to become certified on the use of the MP-5's, including live-fire drills, night firing and special tactics.

The unit will conduct security sweeps, roadblocks, intelligence gathering and passenger behavior pattern recognition, a procedure developed by Israeli airport security forces to identify potentially dangerous passengers. It will also act as a rapid response team to terrorist incidents and other high-risk situations.

Since the Sept. 11 attacks, Logan has aggressively pursued security improvements, becoming the first in country to have an in-line baggage screen plan approved by the Transportation Security Administration and to use several forms of high-tech security technology.

My brother in law had his picture taken with 2 LE types in New York who were wearing semi-military type uniforms and carrying semi-auto weapons (not sure what type but the magazine was behind the trigger group).  Reminded me of pictures a friend showed me when he was in France in the 60's.

Hey, just like those "man on the street" photos you see in third-world countries--soldiers in the streets with heavy armament.

Hope they are as good as they say they are and can get consistant head shots. And that they have good optics on those MP-5's. That is what it will take.

No, the P90 doesn't have good effects AFTER it goes through the armor. It would take lots and lots of rounds to stop a determined religious fanatic. The more powerful 5.56mm, and its better available bullets would still be the best combination.

Oh really? Based on what information do you make this assertion? Do you know these men? Have you insight into their training?

As a member of the flying public I'm going to ask myself if I am [b]filled with comfort[/b] in the knowledge that Massachusetts State Police are patrolling Logan International armed with suppressed MP5's.

Of course you realize there will be other police agencies who will see this and do the same thing.  Meanwhile you'll still get your ass mugged in the parking garage.

I wouldn't normally do this, but it's 2 AM, I had a reeeal long day at work, and I just don't give rat's ass right now.



Not to mention, those "elite" troopers would never be dispatched to "serve and protect" you whilst you are getting the sh*t kicked out of you for your money and car. On top of that, your sorry ass would get thrown in jail if you tried to protect yourself with a concealed pistol without also having MA's Class A carry permit, which is very difficult to obtain.

I was at Logan a few mons after 9/11, and the terminal was patrolled by some black suited ninja dudes with MP-5s with a  sure-fire light.  No emblems on the guy, so I don't know where he was from.

Just ask yourself, can all of these LE people with their MP5s could have prevented the hijacking of the 2 planes back then? They are just making a lot of noise to impress the natives. The real seriously committed people are not going to be impressed, remember those original 9/11 hijackers were martyrs.

As to the "collateral damage" and "hose down" folks, I take it you have never shot an MP5 or been through a Basic Subgun Operator's Course? The MP5 is EXTREMELY accurate at close-in ranges, even on full auto, and these only have S-1-2 trigger groups, so it is not like someone could dump a whole mag with one trigger manipulation. It is simply a matter of training the operators, and very few LE agencies are going to issue something like an MP5 without even a basic Course, these days.

Besides, a long gun almost always beats a handgun in shootings. The longer sight radius and longer barrel makes for far greater inherent accuracy. If someone is going to be shooting at BGs, terrorists or other malcontents in a crowd, and is concerned about not hitting any innocents in the AO, then a long gun is a far better choice than a handgun.

I don't know if an MP5SD is the best choice (probably some stupid LE administrator who still thinks that .223 has more overpenetration than pistol rounds), but they are definitely better armed, and an MP5SD is a good, reliable and fairly sound weapon. Cleaning them sucks, but that is another issue.

I believe they are state policemen. However, they are on assignment to Massport, which is the state agency that controls all "ports". That's only a guess, BTW, but a semi-edumacated one...

Airport ticket counters and security lines are favorit targets of terrorists for conventional firearm and hand grenade attacks.
