If you're under the age of 50, you might not know about this.  In the 1952-1953 season, NBC broadcast a special documentary, titled Victory At Sea, which covered the naval war during World War Two.  Being an American program, it had heavy emphasis on the Pacific War.  Orchestral music, war footage, and good, old-fashioned patriotism.  If you don't like this, you're a communist and you should be ashamed of yourself.

"The Battleships" is also a really good 4-part documentary on naval warfare.

Watching it would convince even Dport that recommissioning all four Iowa class BBs is a fantastic idea.

I have it, phenomenal.

Amazing that I can almost visualize what's happening during the war based solely on the music.

I got the whole series on DVD for five bucks at Wallyworld. Now I need World At War.

BB's are not a feasible option right now.  When railgun technology comes out and can be fitted on a ship, then the BB's may make a comeback.

Loved that series - my favorite was and will always be the Battle Of Midway and the first battle Of THe Phillipine Sea. (The Great Marianas Turkey Shoot).

Nothing more awe-inspiring than to see a pack of Grumman Hellcats dispense some Lake City M2 AP on a thin-skinned Japanese Zero and making him go down in Flames.

My Dad would always pop up a bunch of popcorn before 'Victory at Sea" came on. I remember another show at about the same time called "Navy Log", but I can't remember a thing about it.

My dad was in the navy in the pacific. To say he loved it is quite the understatement. He and my husband bonded over long talks about his time at sea. I bought him every good DVD set I could find about WWII. When he died my mom gave them back to us. I've since bought my husband civil war DVDs to go with them. Good stuff.

Mostly personal stories rather than plain old history.

Really?  I thought it was the Wisconsin and Mighty Mo firing cruise missiles at targets in Iraq and shelling targets on land with 16" guns.

Academic at this point.  I was simply offering Dport the opportunity to implode.

I saw it first run on TV... brought home the reality of what war & death was...pretty strong stuff for a small kid
Nevertheless, excellent production & superb soundtrack!
Yes, World At War is 30+ hours of in-depth history that should be required for every school kid
and, yes I do have the DVDs...

All upright Americans own a copy of Victory At Sea on DVD.  I ordered mine on Amazon.com for something like $23.00 after shipping a few years back.  A week after I received my order, I was in Wal Mart and saw it in the $5.00 bin for, well, $5.00-same 3 disk edition.  I picked up a copy there and gave it to my Dad, who in my youth would sit down with me and watch it (along with World At War) when I was very young.  I'm sure many here-like myself-feel that it was some of the best bonding time one could have with his father.

I still watch it on Sunday evenings every now and again.  My father comes over and we still watch it sometimes
