Many of the "Proto" or "Pre-bird" Dino's have been found in material that had preserved the shape and features of the Feathers.

Archaeopteryx (Pic above)was the first one. It was found in a shale deposit in (I think) Germany in the early part of the 20th century. It wasn't to have had feathers until later. You can actually see where the feathers were in the shale.....It's really cool! (Sorry, Nerd moment)

There is a HUGE debate in the Dino digging/studying community as to weather birds are the direct descendants of the Dinos or just a case of parallel evolution.
