Lib(eral)by Dole is just as much of a political position weather vane as her old man. Notice that she is not quoted at all as supporting the 2nd Amendment as it was written.

Dole Alters Gun Control Stance
In Quest for GOP Nomination in N.C., Dole Caters to Right

As a Republican presidential candidate, Elizabeth Dole took notably moderate stands on gun control. She supported a ban on assault weapons and a three-day wait for purchases at gun shows. She criticized state laws letting people carry concealed weapons.

Now that she's running for the Senate in North Carolina, Dole has changed her stance on all those issues. In a recent letter to the state's premier gun-rights group, she said, "We do not need new restrictions on those who already observe the thousands of gun laws on the books.''

Dole's comments come as she parries attacks from the political right in her quest for the GOP nomination to succeed retiring Sen. Jesse Helms (R-N.C.).

In her short-lived 1999 presidential bid, she positioned herself to the left of George W. Bush on several issues, especially gun control. In a May 1999 speech in Washington, she said, "It's wrong to let people carry concealed weapons." She added: "While I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, I simply cannot accept that in modern America you need an AK-47 to defend your family. I won't shy away from the tough issues, even if some in my party don't like it." Now, in a state whose GOP primary voters are staunchly conservative, she is shifting rightward.

"In the past, I expressed support for the ban on 'assault weapons,'" Dole said in her Oct. 30 statement to the North Carolina Rifle and Pistol Association, an affiliate of the National Rifle Association. "Seven years after President Clinton and his allies outlawed so-called 'assault' weapons, there appears to have been little effect on crime prevention or punishment. What is effective is the Instant Check system. We should stick with what works.''

Dole also said, "North Carolina has another common sense proposal in place: a right-to-carry law that allows citizens to obtain a concealed handgun permit from the local sheriff after being trained and certified.'' Local sheriffs tell her "the law is working,'' she said.

Campaign spokesman Jay Warshaw said Dole has adjusted her views on gun control based on states' experience with new laws.

"With regard to concealed weapons," Warshaw said, "she said at the time it's a matter for states to decide. Her concerns have been satisfied regarding the North Carolina law.'' Regarding the assault weapons ban, he said, "she wants to review its effectiveness.''

Dole has failed to mollify at least one rival for the GOP nomination, Lumberton radiologist Jim Parker. The News and Observer of Raleigh, which first reported Dole's new positions on gun control, quoted Parker as saying: "She started her career in 1965 in Washington, D.C., and she hasn't made it this far without covering her tracks and spinning her views when the political winds blow."

Yup, that isn't supporting the original intent of the 2nd Amendment but encouraging its infringement.

What in the hell is the GOP thinking of even trying to run her as a candidate? If she gets elected, you know she is going to vote for every single piece of crap gun control that goes through the senate.

And that makes her different from other politicians?  How?

I forget who said it, but if a woman is ever elected president, we'll go to war every 28 days.

What that !@#$% should have said was, "who needs an AK47 to hunt Bambi"?

Or,

"Who needs an UZI to go duck hunting?"

Around the world, the AK47 is the preferred choice to defend one's family. Can over a million head of households be wrong over Lizzy?

Yeah, she's the epitome of the grasping phoney that seeks a career in politics, a total Republicrat committed to the system because that's what's best for her own self-interest.  She's like a Stepford wife who's trying to be a senator, pretty appalling.

She is not the GOP candidate yet and someone earlier said something about the GOP LETTING her run.  They can't stop her from running, it's just a matter of the Republican voters in NC electing her in the primary and I don't think they will.

Talk about a freakin' lynch mob...before you send Elizabeth Dole to gas chamber, let me try to defend her a little bit. She is very good woman,in the sense that every job she has held, she's always tried to help people. Now, saying that...she is NOT HILLARY "BOO" Clinton!

She's not running for Senator in Carolina to TAKE away anyone's rights OR do anything "for the children". She is NOT a LIBERAL! RUSH Limbaugh says there is no thing as a moderate..but, Liddy and her husband and have tried desparately to walk that line. Wrong thing to do IMHO.

I have met her on numerous occasions while she was on the Presidential trail here in Florida and a few Christian campaign functions. She is real. Period. If there is something that she stands for that is wrong..i.e. the issue of home schooling here in Florida. She got "educated" by people who cared enough to explain to her the FACTS. She changed her position and has held it ever since.

Now you can go on with your "closet" websites and such...and label her a liberal. You're wrong. She is not a carpet-bagging bitch from New York...like you-know-who.

As far as gun control or "assault" weapons issues...fire darts all day long but, if someone would actually show up in her office and explain...I guaran-damn-tee you that she would listen and factor that in. She will listen to commons sense and follow it. TRUTH and FACTS always defeat hyperbole and bs...especially with those who will listen. Elizabeth Dole will listen.

I put her in the same category as Kay Bailey H. for Texas...great women, and we'd real fortunate to have them serve.

You got your work cut out for you...don't whine, bitch and moan...go out and do something. It's a citizen's right to be heard...just make sure you're not yelling.

Just my opinion,

I like how the Washington Post describes opposition to CCW, the law in 33 of the 50 states, as "moderate".

Hello Imbroglio,

Mrs. Dole is also a statist. This came out when the Bush Twins received underage drinking citations. It was reported that when Mrs. Dole was Secretary of Transportation she pushed through a requirement of all states to raise the legal drinking age to 21 or lose US Transportation Funds. Texas was a state that was forced to obey her mandate. Clearly, Mrs. Dole should be problematic for all who cherish the Constitution and States Rights and Individual Rights. Hopefully the good people of North Carolina will find and elect a better soul to represent them in Washington DC.

Spoken like a true politician, adjusting her views to the audience.  Her views will change with the political wind just to get elected. She is still anti-gun, I hope you folks a NC find a more pro-gun GOP candidate.

She's an idiot and so is that loser Bob Dole.  Why the hell the Republicans thought he could beat Clinton, I have no idea.  Anyone whose political agenda goes above and beyond the limited powers of government is a tyrant and must be taken down if we are ever to return to any semblance of individual liberty in this country.  The Republicans and Democrats are nearly 100% guilty of subrogating the Constitution whenever it suits them.  Thus, they are despots and nothing more.

BTW, the CHL in NC is a total joke.  There are so many exemptions regarding where you can carry, it's a legal morass.  Plus, the liberal prosecutors go after self-defense cases quite readily.  That isn't even to mention the invasion of your privacy that takes place when you apply for the permit.  Did I mention it costs $90 and you have to take a bullshit safety course?  It doesn't matter if you've been shooting guns since you were old enough to walk.

Just going through the process of being allowed to buy a handgun here is ridiculous and insulting, I won't undergo the indignity of the carry permit when I know full well what the text of the 2nd Amendment says (even though it is largely meaningless nowadays).

It sounds a lot like the situation the Clinton's have.  One sexully healthy person, one not.Different outcome? We'll see. She's a slippery one. She could slide right underneath your door and appear as the politician you can really believe in right before your eyes.
