GEORGETOWN, Ky. (WKYT) - A Scott County father has filed a complaint against a Lexington police officer, accusing him of harassing his 13-year-old son during a youth soccer game.

The boy's father, Patrick Dean Rase, says in the complaint that Keith Spears, a Lexington police officer and a parent of one of the players, was unhappy with the boy's refereeing, approached him after the game, verbally confronted him, then shoved him and grabbed his wrist. Oliver Barber, the attorney on this case, said the boy had warned Spears of unsportsmanlike behavior during the game. He says Spears twisted the boy's arm behind his back and said "Are you going to throw me out now, punk?"

According to the complaint, someone else intervened before the incident escalated. Barber hopes the attention this incident has gotten will make an impact.

"I think you make it difficult for ther persons who have been involved in this activity to do it again. I think you make them understand that this is not something that they can get away with," Barber said.

Barber said the boy is still refereeing. The Scott County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation. Lexington Police won't comment on the matter except to say they're aware of it.

I care.

No reason for anyone to lay hands on a 13 y/o over a fucking game.

Assuming that is in fact what happened.

The problem is overbearing parents living vicariously through their children.  They're kids.  Most won't go on to play college sports.  Very, very few will be pro athletes.  It's a game.  Let them enjoy it and learn the lessons that come from teamwork, competition, and sportsmanship and hopefully they apply those appropriately when they become adults.

My kids learn more life lessons from losing than they do from winning.

We lost a soccer match to a team who was cheating (silly 10 y/o rules, but whatever) and we had to suck it up and deal with it.

Kids learned a valuable lesson. Somtimes people are shitty, but you have to rise above it.

Why?

He got a front row seat to 'respect my authority' theater and didn't get cuffs put on him.

He will now know what to expect in the future from his benevolent peace keepers.

Cheating?  Well, that would be the ref's job, then wouldn't it?

JBTs just can't control themselves.

The fact that stories like this get national exposure says a lot about the dysfunctional nature of our culture.  This should be solved by the parties involved and go no further as it's nobody else's business.

I'm afraid I'd have been on my way to jail and the cop would have been injured.

Hell, he'd better follow through and not just stand there and talk smack if he grabs my 13 year old, 6' 155# judoka maniac of a son or he's gonna learn some really nasty tricks from a really limber kid. Sure, he'd be able to ratchet it up and kick the boy's ass and that's the part where I'd be going to jail.

He only bullied the kid because he was 'roid bigger, and though he'd get away with it.

If the father was to witness the man putting his son in a wrist lock and proceeded to kick out his knee, tearing the MCL/ACL/PCL and rendering the threat neutralized.....what would happen?

He'd probably get charged with assault of an officer. It nearly happened to Zimmerman with an undercover cop in a bar, remember?

Meh, this behavior goes on in kids sporting events all the time. Him being a Cop makes little difference. Kids and sports turn some perfectly normal adults into complete assholes. Seen it many times. At the end of the day it is supposed to be fun for the kids and hopefully they learn some valuable life skills.

So, I can come to your house, twist your wife's or one of your kids arms behind their back and taunt them and you'll be ok with that? Really? I doubt it.

I was on our soccer board for 11yrs.
We had parents threatening other parents and players.
Players dropping F-Bombs over bad calls.
Referees abandoning games due to parent behavior.
Referees that could not run the length of the field.
Moms telling me, they have to get alot of yellow and red cards...they're playing at a high level.

In the end, our best teams went to the State Cup matches maybe once or twice.
3 or 4 kids got looked at for college soccer, none played Div.1.

Parents had some vicious fist fights at our little league games when I was a kid. I still remember the one parent who slammed a guy's head into the backstop pole, splitting his head wide open.
Link Posted: 10/24/2013 3:13:29 PM EDT

I am really dreading the start of the girls youth basketball. Some parents just go crazy. It really isn't even fun when my girls play

certain teams. They usually do well. Zero losses last year and only 1 the year before, but it still takes so much away from the game.
