Hotlinked because AF.mil photos are ginormous

I am far from an expert, but that looks like a Dragunov (#2), and what type of M-16 had no FA or brass deflector?

Not an expert here either but I believe the first M16s had no forward assist or brass deflector.

The M16 with super sweet green is a Colt/Armalite Mod 601.

I thought the "I'm far from an expert..." would immunize me from criticism.

I mean no forward assist, not no-full-auto.

With the thumbhole stock, #4 is probably a 'Brucie'.

I've always thought that one of the reasons for the M16A2 designation was the addition of the forward assist, so I've associated M16A1 without the FA and the A2 with the FA.

Am I wrong?

Why does the slick side have a 'green' look? Just curious if captured American-made weapons would be overhauled and placed into service.

M16A1 also has a FA.

M16A2 has 3 rd burst, new sights and a new forward handgrip.

I believe the early ARs had green and sometimes brown stocks.

Being an old "triangular handguard, 3 prong flash hider" Air Force guy myself, I guess I should fill you in on something:

The forward assists were insisted on by the Marine Corps circa 1968, and prior to that, the M-16's did not have them.

Just FYI.

EDIT: And by the way, the Air Force has some of the oldest M-16s in existence, because they adopted it before the Army did.

Nope, FA courtesy of Army pukes that just had to be different.

Suppressed M82A1 in the background.

The slick side 601 had a green look because that's the way they were. The original furniture was brown -

Then they were painted green.

601, XM16E1, M16A1

My apologies. I poked around on-line and it seems I was mistaken about the FA being a Marine Corps demand. I defer to your greater knowledge of this issue.

I know that there ARE books that claim that it was the Marines who wanted the FA (I think Sweeney makes that claim in his AR-15 VOLUME ONE), but I guess they must be mistaken.
