Oh man, that sucks. Any idea what went wrong?

I just built one for my '68 and I'm nervous as hell about starting it for the first time.

Even if it's just from the cam... Which it is.  The mains are probably fucking thrashed

I'm going to guess used lifters on used cam that weren't broken in together.  Not my doing so who the fuck knows

I'll snap pics of the lifters when I get home.

Sounds like a good time to throw the rebuild together with a roller cam setup then

Just trying to make light on a total bummer of a situation.  Hopefully the cam survived the issue

Yeah I did have it running, but never for long, never under load, etc.

I intend to rip into it here soon.  Regardless, I'm saving for a stroker or 400 short block.

Not putting any money into the guts of this engine.  See above post.

OP, what oil did you use?
A while back there was an issue using modern oil with old school flat tappet lifters.
The results were just like what you had.

The issue was the lack of zinc and they make several oils formulated for older engines.

I didn't install the valvetrain and have no idea if it was broken in right.

I had this thing running such a short time that I could have used vegetable oil and it wouldn't have caused this.

flat tappet cams have been sucking for a while, newer oil  doesn't have the additives  older oil formulations had,  pretty much most hot rodders are going to roller cams.

Plus a lot of flat-tappet lifters are just shit now, right form the factory - almost like they forgot how to make and harden them.  Uncle Tony's Garage had avideo about multiple failures of brand new lifters in Dodge V-8s.

Guys it's hysterical at this point.

Every. Single. rod was loose enough to move by hand on the crank.  Half of them audibily.

Most new oils don't have the zinc in them needed for flat tappet cams. I run a high zinc oil in my flathead to keep the little lifters lifting. Roller cams are nice but I've had a roller lifter fail and send the little needles all through the oil system too. Nothing like breaking in a new hi-lift solid lifter motor at 2 AM with open headers. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's crazy the rods were loose.  Like lose in that the bolts weren't tightened or loose from someone having the crank turned and not coming back in with the right bearings to keep clearance correct?

I'll post a video today.

It's so bad I'm not sure how it happened.  I really really don't know how rods didn't come out.  Seriously, this is once in a lifetime type WTF.

I guess it's a testament to how loud this thing is in my garage since I didn't hear it

I don't even know what to make of that.  Will be interesting what you find when you pop the rod caps off.  Some of those just look like rods with the wrong bearings in them, but that last one almost acts like there is no bearing at all, or it is missing one of the shells.

What's the history on that motor?  Either a kid rebuilt it and didn't know what was going on, or someone intentionally screwed it up.   Only other thing that makes any sense is maybe it spun a rod bearing, guy pulled it apart and realized it and didn't want to fix it, so just hammered it all back together to get it out of his shop.

I can't get a straight answer out of my brother and his dipshit friend about the motor, so I have no idea.

All I know is I had less than an hour of run time on it

Loose main bearings are free horsepower, I figure you got at least 30-40 more HP out of that engine with how loose they are.

Then bolt on stuff gets more expensive.

I probably have $2k in bolt ons for a sbc

You don't need bolt-ons with an LS motor.  Throw a cam, valvesprings, and LT headers on it and it's good.

Ouch, sounds like your oil pressure failed somehow, either the pump failed or the cam drive gear/distributor had issue.
No oil and the bearings/lifters/cam got ate to shit.
I've been there, spent a bunch of money on a 383 and the distributor gear drive on the cam somehow lost a bunch of teeth...
I had to have the crank and rods re-honed, new cam, new distributor gear and all new bearings.
Why? a void in the cam casting.
iske offered me a free replacement cam, so that was nice

No hope for rebuilding it?  Even on a budget with just new bearings?

Is the cam and/or crank wiped out?
