I do them regularly but fix in planking and a bit of yoga. 35-40 then plank 60 seconds, rest in a yoga position while stretching my back, then 20 pushups, then another minute of planking, then as many push-ups as I can do. No more back pain and the results were almost immediate when I started last May.

200-300 a day???? Damn fellas! No slack

I think a better exercise for this challenge would be inverted rows....but that's just me.  Or at the very least to balance it out a bit...

Best not to over do the first day.

If I was trying to do 300 a day starting from zero, I would start with 10 on the first day and increase +10 per day for a month.

I think about 150/day is an appropriate goal for me.

300 a day is doable , but I myself would more than likely  start to need a rest day in between days as I'm getting older and I don't think my joints would be verry happy with me. That's the long version of, it would probably take me twice as long to reach the number you have set for your goal.

I did 250 last week at 180 bodyweight.  I'd rather keep lean now.

Ultimately I want to get my bench press to +100 over my bodyweight this year so I'm going to try to add 35lbs to it in 2023.  If I am successful, good.

If not, I will get close.

Sounds like you got it figured out then. Always good to not be a fatty.

I'm working on my 2nd set of 250 (5 sets of 50 each) right now.

100 down, 150 to go.

I can tell it's going to take me a little to acclimate to this schedule again.

51 years old here.
Ive found that body weight exercises are a real lifesaver.
I have a routine where I do 50 push ups, sit ups, dips 10 pull ups and plank for a minute every morning before work, and repeat when I get home.
Been on it for 6 months and I feel great. Excellent way to improve your health and your physical appearance.

you'll get close.

stay on it everyday.

I wanted to do 30k in 2021, and ended up reaching 60k.

Early in 21 I was only doing 100/day 3 times per week.

By April I was doing 4 days of 300 and 2 days of 250 for 1700/wk.

By July I was up to 2,000/wk.

August became 2500/wk.

It is doable.

If you want some tips let me know. Looks like you have it covered

I started doing pushups in April 2020 and my first set was 18 shaky pushups.

I can now easily knock out sets of 65. I even did 1,000 pushups in one day a couple times.

In 2021 I did 71,350 pushups and in 2022 I did 77,935 pushups.

nicely done!

I've contemplated trying for 100k in a year and this would be the year to go for it.  If I can reach the 70k mark in the time I have allotted, 30k in 16 weeks is reachable.

I was trying to do single 1000 pushup days every 10k and that is a time requirement that ranged from 1 hour to almost 4 depending on when I was attempting the test.

It is a very tricky thing to accomplish when 3 weeks prior to it, you did 3000 pushups each of those weeks.

The next time I plan on trying a 1000 pushup day will probably be sometime around getting to 20k this year.

Lots of HIIT can be done body weight only, which makes it easy to do at work or on the road.  Hotel doesn't have a gym or its terrible?  IDGAF, I do HIIT that day

I have done a couple 1000 push-up days but I do them in a specific way. Since I WFH, I add a lot of rest in between sets.

I think the first time took me just under 12 hours, 2nd time was 11 hours. But I wasn't racing by any means.

I have no plans to do 70k in a year or anything close to that. With arthritis in both big toes, a left shoulder impingement, and a right shoulder torn AC (5 years ago), I'm relegated to doing pushups on my knees (though it just occurred to me that I could try putting a foam roller under my shins right above my feet to get the weight off my toes, maybe?).

Anyway, I've been doing inclined pushups on the kitchen counter every other day for a couple months...better than nothing, and started on the floor Tuesday, with a decent 50 reps.  (53yo, 210#)

well, I am just one persons experience

I have done 65 pushups / 30 chinups pretty much every morning when I roll out of bed for the last 25 years

Lifted weights in some form for the last 35 years

when doing pushups now

my elbows sound like your running sandpaper over a rusty old sewer pipe

Still benching a max of over 300lbs but I feel like when I do that that there is going to be a good chance some day that my elbow is just gonna blow the tendons out

My knees click and pop when doing squats

just had surgery to kill nerves in my spine

I don't know any weightlifters over 60 who have done it their whole adult life like I have who have GOOD joints

every single one of us has shit for joints

it is just the price you pay, you put that much stress on something like that for that many years, it wears out.  Heck you don't do that and it still wears out.  Aging sucks donkey balls hard and long.

You may end up one of the gifted few who never have problems, but don't count on it.  Every young person is gonna live forever just like you are until you don't

Would I still have done it, yes

Am I still doing it, yes

Just be aware what is at the end of the tunnel.

daily pain

again, still would have and do daily lift

benefits outweigh the pain (in my opinion)

but walk into it with open eyes boys

Good work Sir.

I get it about knee popping noises too.  Snap crackle pop is a thing for me since my 20s.  All related to basketball in my youth.

My friend John is 68 and just had rotator cuff surgery and he was doing 100-120 pushups daily up until sometime in December.
I have no expectation that I'll be able to do as much as I am now in the next 25 years.

Heck 10 years ago I was much stronger than I am now and my diet consisted of what was likely 5000 calories daily to support the strength training I was doing.

I have a hard time imagining myself being 45lbs heavier than I am today and have been for the last year (~180).

As my friend Alan the preacherman would say, you were probably as strong as an ox and likely about as smart as one too.

Today there is wisdom behind my training.

Men who can do 40 push-ups far less likely to develop heart disease

BOSTON — Here’s one way to predict your heart health: get down and give me 41. A recent study finds that men who can perform at least 40 push-ups in one attempt are much less likely to suffer from heart disease within the next 10 years.

Researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public health say their report is the first to show how push-up capacity is linked to heart disease. They found that middle-aged men who can log more than 40 push-ups in a single try have a 96% reduced risk of developing the potentially deadly condition and other related ailments, such as heart failure, compared to those who can complete no more than 10 push-ups.

For their study, the authors reviewed health data from 1,104 active male firefighters taken annually from 2000 to 2010. At the start of the study, the average participant was about 40 years old with an average body mass index of 28.7. The firefighters were tasked with performing as many push-ups as they could, and their treadmill tolerance was also tested.

By the end of the study period, 37 participants suffered from a heart disease-related condition — and 36 of those men weren’t able to log more than 40 push-ups in the initial test. The results of the treadmill test were not as clearly linked to heart disease diagnoses.

“Our findings provide evidence that push-up capacity could be an easy, no-cost method to help assess cardiovascular disease risk in almost any setting,” says the study’s first author, Justin Yang, an occupational medicine resident at the school, in a statement. Surprisingly, push-up capacity was more strongly associated with cardiovascular disease risk than the results of submaximal treadmill tests.”

The authors note that because the study was completed by middle-aged men with active occupations, the results shouldn’t be considered the same for women or men who are less active or of different ages.

This study was published in JAMA Network Open.
