Actually, they all go up in smoke and most folks call it a blastoff.

Good luck to the best of the rest of what is left. I left the program in April after almost 10 years.

Part of me is sad to see the Shuttles pass into history.

But the rest of me says, "Well, bye."

The Shuttle system was a 70's design. Let's move on.

Go SpaceX!!!!!

I agree, lets move one. But, shouldn't we have had something ready before shutting down what we had?

Probably.

But what did we have between Apollo and the Shuttle?

Just sayin'.

That makes too much sense. Government doesn't like to have any real plans.

I admit to knowing next to nothing about the shuttles.....

Is/Was there any difference among shuttles?

Did some have different mission specialties or were they all basically the same vehicle?

I've always wondered why we needed 5 of them, if they were all just basically the same craft.

Maybe he sneak info launch sites for a living?

I wish I could find some video of the launch with no narration... the kids love to watch the launch turned up real loud, but I don't need all the talking...

I was lucky enough to be at KSC on 6/1/11 when the Endeavor landed and the Atlantis had been just moved out to the pad. Awsome site. Can you show us a pic of the new rocket?

Hope you're one of the lucky ones who will still have a job afterward.

The plan was to have 4. Columbia, Challenger, Atlantis and Discovery. After Challenger, they built Endeavor "roughly" out of spare parts. Then we lost Columbia, leaving only three. There were 2 launch pads at KSC for STS, 39A and 39B. The idea was to have one orbiter being processed while one was being launched. They aren't like airplanes where they can launch right after they land.

What have we "accomplished" in space (orbit) lately that warrants us to be up there much longer anyway?

Sure, we noodle-around with the Hubble here-and-there, but if it had been built right the first time...

I say git-r-done, then git-r-scrapped.

If it had been built "right" the first time, it would probably have been obsolete. However, the success of the first Hubble repair mission led to a number of significant upgrades that have allowed Hubble to continue collecting images far beyond the telescope's original service life.

It took us away from real space travel and caused us to abandon heavy lift rockets.
