A sad day.
So many great planes being put out to pasture.
Maybe it's just me, but the new birds, the F22 and the like, just don't have that "look" that the old warbirds do.
To sterile for me.

Litteraly every day I see 'new' ones being placed on 'active retirement' here in Tucson at DM AFB, sad.

If they are switching to FA18s, what are the RIOs going to do?

Won't be long now, the only place you'll see them flying is by watching Topgun!

I thought the Super Hornets were a 2 man flight crew?  Maybe only some are.

RIO's will still have the rear seat. My daughter's BF is a RIO at Oceana. About to start 6 months of training on the F-18.

Cool, now an outdated, old plane can finally go to bed.

There are two variants of the Super Hornet... the E and the F. The E is a single-seat, the F is a two-seat. The NFO in the F is called a WSO.

Tomcatters are transitioning to the F/A18f Super Hornet which is a two seater.  The are not RIO's anymore the are WSO's.

Old planes never die.....they just soar in a different sky....

To the F-14, One of the last from the Grumman Iron Works.... May the wings of memories keep you aloft.

The F-14 hasn't performed at the Miramar Airshow for at least 3-years now. It's so disappointing that they can't get them to come out here for a final goodbye.

Fightertown USA - not anymore.

Though it looks like this year they will have an F-4, F-22, and A-10, so that is an improvement.

Super Hornets are the E/F variant.
E is the single seat, the F is the dual seat.

When I served on the USS Independence CV62, they were by far my favorite bird.  Carrier AirWing 5 had the blackknights and they had some good looking birds.  But there was also the Damnbusters, an F18 Squadron as well.

I also got to see the last of the A6 Intruders before they were sent out to pasture.

Man I must be getting old.

They don't train there anymore?  What happened to TopGun where they teach advance tactics?

Good thing you ain't running the DoD.

We'd still have P-38s and P-51s as our air defense.

Miramar is now MCAS Miramar and has been since 1997. Top Gun is in Fallon, NV. The only Navy guys at Miramar that I know of are with the F/A-18 FRS there.

NAS Miramar became MCAS Miramar in 97. Top Gun was moved to Fallon, NV. All the F-14's were redistibuted to other bases, don't know where the E-2's went. Miramar now has USMC F-18's (C's and D's) and C-130's and some choppers.

As staff or students or both?
The main F-18 RAG on the west coast is out of NAS Lemoore.

E-2's and the wing went to NAS Point Mugu.
The C-2's are still out of NAS North Island.
The F-14's went to NAS Oceana.
