Is there a acceptable substitute for it? Or do I need the exact one?

I am on my 3rd one in a year and a half. Sorry wish i could help, I have the 3 yr at home warranty. Seems alot of people i know are having them go out.

you have have to buy the exact one. it requires the same voltage and amperage

Jeez, I threw out about 40 or 50 of those when we got rid of all of our Dell C-Series Latitudes. Work coulda financed my next EBR.

The connector piece on the adapter itself is starting to split.

I dont want it to catch fire or anything.

We order most of our replacement laptop parts from Impact Computers

Hit the local computer stores, there are a few "universal" power supplies out there for laptops. Kensington has some, I forget the other brands. They have changeable tips to fit different laptops. They don't work with everything, but you might get lucky.
