Background, Looking to get a new (used) vehicle for the wife unit.  Currently she drives 2000 Explorer with 180000 miles on it.  Its starting to show it age and the wife would like third row seats.  Looked at 4 door Jeep JKs (too much $$$ for what they offer)  Another Explorer, around 2007 or 08, Expeditions which are too much for the mileage and the MY we are looking for (typically in the 24K+ for under 60k miles and MY06+).  I am not a GM fan (ex Ford employee, plus bail out BS) but I have looked at Yukons and Suburbans, still over 20K$.

So today we ran across as 2008 Land Rover LR3 with 65K miles on it for $19000.  Wife loves it (some comment about stiff nips ) , but I am concerned about maintenance cost.  I do my own vehicle repair and a LR seems like a all new ball game compared to Ford and GM, plus all the electronics seem like a good fail point to me.

BTW we will go off roading with it.

That is quite a few miles...

Edit.

Consider an 08 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland, probably has all of the same options and is cheaper.

I drive one. I love it.

Ouch.

You can do better, especially if you are worried about Maint costs.

I like them...but I also drive a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel...so I do not mind the potential issues with vehicles...I like something unique.   I have a savings account set aside for potential issues...sort of like a warranty.

Or you could be like everyone else and buy a silver Tacoma

Buy a warranty and you should be good to go...I believe in 2008 Land Rover was still owned by Ford....

Really?  It seemed 'fair' compared to loaded Explorers and GMs, maybe 1K higher.

If you're worried about maintenance cost then why the hell are you considering buying a land rover?

You seem to like Land Rovers.  They must have good to you, or you have alot of expendable $$$.

I don't have an issue with paying more for parts, I just don't want to be working on it all the time.  The Explorer we have has been relatively maintenance free (minus wearable items).

You don't buy a Land Rover unless you plan on working on it.

Was going to say, anyone I've known (there's been three) that had owned an LR, never owned one again.

Overpriced crap if you ask me!

My dad has had a Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, LR3, and and now a LR4.

They have all been great...  I know alot of people state they are bad on maintenance but he has not had any problems.

To you guys saying the '05s and up the OP should run.  There is a difference between maintenance and fixing broken parts.

Both can be expensive on high dollar vehicles but maintenance should already be planned out ahead.  Fixing crap left and right is another issue if it's constantly in the shop and generally unreliable.

Most of what I have read about the Land Rovers and Range Rovers are electrical issues because of all the gismos they put in them and thus leads to the always in the shop always chasing a short.  Many fires have happened due to these electrical issues.  I would steer clear of the brand, but that's just me.

65,000 miles? RUN, I have had quite a few friends with different LR's, EVERYONE started to go to shit, like clockwork a 50,000, Heater cores, the air shock system, different cooling hoses.

I almost traded my truck and bought a LR years ago.

Until I realized I was infatuated with the history, lore, romance, marketing, etc etc of LRs.

But I woke up and realized the reality of owning one was endless repair bills and getting stranded.

So I didn't fo.

I am so glad I didn't in hind sight.

This is what you ask for

But this what you really get.

Any questions?

Love my '06 LR3. 80k miles and runs great. The Jag motors on these things are outstanding.

When your looking at the JD power rankings look at the actual numbers not just were LR is sitting in the list (which is usually next to Jeep).

I love Land Rovers. The LR3 has some amazing technology in it that makes it insane offroad but also great on the road.

That being said, I wouldn't trust one without a warranty or a back up vehicle. I think over the time I owned mine, the warranty paid more than the vehicle was worth.
