Well, it was decent run I guess. Got called into HR this morning and was informed by the facility VP that I am no longer employed as of today. Had hoped it would last about 6 more years.

Heard from one of my employees ... er, former employees, that a few other senior engineers got let go today too. The VP that was my boss got let go about a month ago and a number of other higher ups throughout the organization have either been let go or left on their own within the last few months. We were told yesterday that unless some new work comes in soon, we are "overstaffed."

Ironically, today was our facility Christmas party. From what I hear, it wasn't too festive.

So, once again the search begins. Glad I had a lot of PTO saved up that I'm going to get paid for.

Wish me luck. Prayers would be appreciated, if you're so inclined.

I'm sorry to hear that. Makes me more appreciative that the company I work for has a corporate "no layoffs" policy from November through January.

Sad news especially with the poor timing.  You are in NY, are you able to relocate to a warmer and maybe even friendlier location?  Best to you and hopefully you can look back on this someday as the start of something very big.

I've been there.

Keep your head up, you have a full job finding a new job now.  Too many people get down in the dumps and take "me time" before starting the search, that just cuts down on the time you have.

Staying positive (as hard as it can be) will help you in your interviews for new work.  Feeling down in the dumps shows all over your face when you're meeting on new positions.

Good luck.

Well, at least they let you know before Christmas so you can reduce your spending. If they had waited until after the first of the year you may have spent a bunch of dough on the holidays that, had you known, you wouldn't have spent.

Good luck. I believe the economy is fixin' to go gang-busters about January 20th.

Sorry to hear that.   Btdt, got the tshirt and a nice case a ptsd.

It's the worse thing that can happen to a man, that doesn't garner much sympathy or support.

Don't worry about the Christmas timing.   That's just one day.  Just focus on landing on your feet.  Living well is the best revenge.

Sorry to hear that OP. Maybe with your background you can find another job, maybe even better than the one you just lost. Can you file for unemployment? If so I would get on that as soon as possible.

That sucks. I got laid off in November but managed to transfer to a direst billable position in my company, albeit at a 35% paycut. while I look for something better This is such a shitty time of year to look for work since most people won't really start hiring until the new year. This is the 3rd time in 3 years I had to go through it too.

If you're hurting for cash theres plenty of temp jobs you can get working retail over the holidays though.

I went through three layoffs at one company about 10y ago.  They were trying to get acquired and would perform a layoff right before an evaluation to reduce the workforce and show higher profitability.  I didn't find this out until the 3rd one.  As soon as I did I let the 3rd layoff happen, then left and my entire department followed me.  Nobody is irreplaceable.  But if you cut to the bone and try and operate on a shoestring budget losing a key player can hurt.  Losing an entire department...took them 3y to re-staff due to the brain drain that occurred.

Didn't matter to the executives though, that 3rd layoff was the trick.  They were purchased by a larger company a few weeks later.  The CEO came to work in a new BMW 750il the following Monday, then a new Porsche 911 that Tuesday.

To be fair the CEO was in the office at 6am and left at 8pm every single day.  Nobody out worked him.  When he was brought in originally, he took the job and didn't realize how bad things really were, just a few months in his role as CEO they couldn't make payroll.  And for about 8-9mo he funded everyone's paycheck from his personal pocket.  People were getting personal checks from him because the company was almost bankrupt.

But when you just fired half your workforce, mostly friends of the people who still work for you, don't flaunt 2 new cars you just bought yourself by selling everyone out.  He earned it...it's just a little humility would have been nice.

Check your employee handbook on PTO/sick time pay out policies and be prepared to talk to the NY department of labor if you don't get paid for everything you've accrued.
Also get any pay stubs or other relevant records together for this.  Time sheets too.

Based on personal experience around 7 years back, the NY DOL will go after companies that short you.  It took a couple months, but I did get my pay.

FYI, at least at the time, employers were only allowed to deduct court ordered child support from your paycheck.  Any tool, uniform, or similar deductions weren't allowed.

ETA:
I'll leave the above for reference, but I read that as "I have a lot of PTO that I'll hopefully get paid for"

Good luck brother, and now's a good time to try and make it to a free state.

Had a Cat guy in at work today, he found out while he was here they will be having more layoffs starting this week as well as a quarter by quarter evaluation on staffing levels next year.  Hate to say it but Cat has way too many people for how much work they have.

FYI, it sucks to be on the other side of that, too.

I was once VP/Finance for a startup company.  We had 16 employees at peak, then one of our sponsors pulled.  We had to let 10 people go on Dec. 20.

When I say "we", I mean the chickenshit CEO told me to do it.

Least fun Christmas ever.
