Well actually my friend does. He owns a building with retail units in it.. he rented one unit to some hatians who did God knows what in there. Now the unit has this horrible spicey smell to it. He's mopped with bleach, left 5 or 6 boxes of baking soda in there etc. The smell will not go away. I figured if anyone would know a trick to getting rid of this. It would be you ladies. I need some tricks, tips for getting rid of odors. I've heard everything from coffee to bars of soap.

Steam clean the carpets.
Fabrics hold oders.....carpeting can hold a LOT of oders -- ask anyone who has pets. |

Don't worry Aim, I knew what you meant. It's not as bad as having the hem of your skirt tucked into the back of your panties, that's for sure.

Actaully it is very simple.
Put a few drops of vanilla extract into the water based wall paint. Odor will vanish! you may do the same with the carpet cleaner. Put it right into the carpet shampoo. BUT MAKE SURE TO TEST IT ON A HIDDEN CARPET SECTION FIRST! Many fibres in carpets differ. What will work for some, will not work for others. Or floor cleaner--leave it on awhile if flooring only. ...And vanilla makes the paint more pleasant to work with anyway! Joyce Something I learned in college interior decorating! |

Mop the tile with hot water and a little vinegar, then mop with Lysol; Vacuum the carpet with Carpet Fresh (but let it sit for a few minutes first), then Febreeze the heck out of it; wipe the walls down; open the windows and put some box fans in there to air it out for a day or so. Should help a ton...
If not, burn it.

You mentioned that he has mopped with bleach - is there any carpet in the unit?
He needs to add the baking soda or white vinegar to the water and clean everything - floors, walls, counters, curtains etc. If there is carpet, sprinkle the baking soda on it, leave it overnight and vacuum. May have to repeat. There is also a Woolite spray carpet cleaner with deodorizer; this works very well. He can also try boiling a pot of water with a little vinegar added. Place shallow dishes of white vinegar throughout the apartment to absorb odors. Kitty litter will work as well. Good luck! |

No doubt! That is a radioactive spice which is absorbed even into the paint on the walls...its chemical warfare...Fabreeze would never ever get it out. You have to remove and replace every last piece of everything...down to the drywall and possibly that too...

Vinegar is a great idea. But the problem with baking soda on a painted wall is that it won't be absorbed into the sheetrock to take the permeated odor away. vinegar many very well work on the floors but not he walls, should they be the problem.
get out that bottle of vanilla. the real stuff, not the imitation....Put it in the paint.... Joyce |

It's not just the carpet...it's the pad that will hold the stench...anything that is porous. Possibly the cleaner for cat urine might work...but I highly doubt it.
The only thing left to do is pray for your friend and his stinky building

Ok wait...I don't remember saying anything about meds, but know quite a bit about them. rxlist.com + med terminology in college. + growing up in a family of ten and being poor, you learn A LOT~!~~  Oh---and four LAZY brothers.  GRRR! Someone had to do the repairs! I was the youngest, so by the time I was a teeenager, hardly anyone was left at home but them! hahaI am just a mom...wait,..no one told me we didn't have to know all this!!!!!!!!DAMN! Thanks, but PLEASE don't ever call me MARTHA!!!!  I can't stand her egotistical BS! And most of her ingredients are SO high priced!! She only offers for the elite. that just ain't right! She has used recipes and called them "hers' that my mother used from 1935. Don't get me started..oops too late! PS-anyone need to know how to install a toilet or lay flooring???

Possibly cooking odors or the toilet. Check the kitchen ceiling out. Also... hate to say it, but check the walls and ceilings for strange dead things or rotted food. They may have been smoking serious weed in there so... maybe painting is a good idea. But my grandma would say, "Open all the windows and doors and air it out."

paint the entire apartment with "Kilz" (spelling?). It can be found at Home Depot. we used to use this stuff when restoring fire damaged houses and it took care of the smell.
A friend of mine also had to use it when he found over 100 dead cats in one of his apartments after the lady that was renting it died. Of course he also had the HAZMAT team in their to do an initial cleaning. But the Kilz stopped the odor. |

All of the suggestions sound like a ton of work. I would just rent a good size professional ozone generator and leave it in there a couple of days.

Ah! I forgot about Kilz. That will definitely get the odor out of the walls, if it's in there. I had to Kilz a concrete floor once in college--my roomie's cat had ruined the carpet, so we had to pull it all up and seal the concrete. Kilz is great stuff and you can get it anywhere. |

IT WAS LATE. I WAS TIRED. I KNOW HOW TO SPELL FREAKING ODOR AND MUCH LARGER WORDS. THE FACT THAT I DID NOT CARE AT THAT POINT IN MY LONG DAY HAD MORE TO DO WITH ME NOT PROOF READING IT. Easy solution. Rent to some more Haitians. I am sure if they went in my Grandmothers house, they would be posting on haiti.com about the smell of the stuff she cooked with. One whiff & they will feel right at home. |

A fresh coat of paint on the walls should help cover that spicy smell, but so would pooping on the floors. Sorry, I am not a domestic diva.

If all else fails, there must be a business around that specializes in clean-up (smoke damage, etc.). May cost a pretty penny, but it costs a lot to have a retail unit that can't be rented out.....

Well one ting people tend to overlook is sometimes the culprit...
The fridge - First make sure its defrosted - anything in it that had odor is in the ice now... The other thing is the drip catcher - they get plain old nasty - make sure its totally empty and spotless AC units can also be a pain - wash the filter if not replacable - spary it out good with lysol and wipe out all the vents what type of odor is it? smoke vomit bad milk? knowing can give you clues... L8r and g'luck |

-File in memory- Excellent idea. Much more pleasant to work with than Kilz. That stuff will do a number on your sinuses, especially if you're not well ventilated. It becomes a mind altering experience if you have to do a small unventilated bathroom. Whew! |
