LAT - Boeing delivers first batch of 30,000-pound bombs to USAF
The Massive Ordnance Penetrator — the Air Force has ordered 20 from Boeing — is nearly five tons heavier than any other bomb in the military's arsenal and is made to pulverize underground targets.

I wonder how they are going to fit them on the B-52. I haven't heard of a new rack to store this gigantic thing. I bet not a single one gets used in anger.

Might be something to do with this?

Awesome. That is a great picture.
Link Posted: 11/16/2011 11:02:54 PM EDT
Just the weight alone is awesome.

Just think of what an inert 30,000 pound object can do when dropped at 55,000 feet and then add explosives.

That picture makes me feel warm and fuzzy all over.

Awesome !!!...It's called a "MOP".

Gives new meaning to the phrase... "Cleaning House".

President - "Tell the Air Force to mop up those terrorists and get us out of there."
Sec. Def. - "Yes sir." *turns to his aid* "You heard the President: deploy the MOP!"

MOP + B-2 = Hard On.

Link Posted: 11/16/2011 11:52:33 PM EDT
So what is the purpose of these? Didn't we already have the MOAB?

I believe the underground thing is for hardened bunkers. The MOAB is an above ground weapon

When this story was discussed some time back IIRC the B2 was supposed to be the only aircraft capable of deploying it. So maybe the B52 is a recent addition.
Link Posted: 11/17/2011 12:09:33 AM EDT

And then there's MOP - Massive Ordnance Penetrator.

30,000 pounds, and the B-2 carries two of them.

I believe it stands for Massive Ordanance Air Burst.

the Russians have an even bigger one.

Yeah, I got that.

But this is about the new MOP, the Massive Ordinance Perpetrator, which is 5 tons heavier than the MOAB. The ATBIP or "FOAB" is physically smaller than either bomb, but the Russians claim it's more powerful than the MOAB.

But explosive power isn't what the MOP is about. It's about penetration combined with explosive power.
Link Posted: 11/17/2011 1:20:21 AM EDT
Finally! This gives the good guys an option other than nukes for dealing with the really hardened underground targets, such as those nuke facilities in Iran. Air strikes now have the potential for doing some serious damage to Iran's nuclear weapons ambitions if all else fails.

Sounds like a portion of the plot of something Jesse Jane would star in.

Well what information The Pentagon and Boeing has made public..........

The truth could be it could be dropped in Ohio and explode in China...

Care to even quote Boeing or the Pentagon on those numbers, and not third party conjecture?

Buff was only used for test. A B-52 could never get near enough to a target the MOP is designed for.

200 (or more) feet of ground penetration.... I bet you can go beside a dome shaped bunker, and detonate from underneath. Anyone have commie korean or glowing Iranian bunker design specs? Are they thin on the bottom?

funny note to add. I just searched specs for " Iranian bunkers" and one of the first few hits was related to the MOP

I remember reading in the opening days of OEF/OIF, the MSN was reporting that Saddam's under ground bunkers were like 250' underground and impervious to bombs, so take it from there.

My question is: HOW does it penetrate so deep?

Do you believe "swamp gas" when they tell you that too? LOL
Link Posted: 11/17/2011 6:42:17 AM EDT
Timing. It's all about timing on the world stage.

During the first Gulf War, Lockheed was tasked with developing some earth penetrating GBUs on short notice. They drew a design up, went to Watervliet Arsenal for the "casing" made up of an artillery tube (a Lockheed rep handed the dimensional specs to his counterpart at Watervliet and his reply was "we don't do that kind of sloppy work here") fabricated on a rotary hammer forge, took delivery of said tubes, filled them with explosives and attached the guidance unit and fins to complete the assembly. The bombs were then loaded on a plane for transport all before the casings had a chance for the explosive fill to cool. The entire process took just a few days, and from everything I was told they worked quite well.

"Gun tube technology" is a highly detailed process with many, many steps to strengthen the barrel and allow it to remain serviceable despite high EFC numbers. The process begins and is tracked from the moment the ore is designated for the foundry until the tube passes its final inspection. That an artillery tube that incorporated this technology was chosen as part of the design is an indication of just how difficult it is to deliver the performance required of an earth penetrating bomb.

Given all that, I can only imagine what R&D went into this thing.
