Well, it's official now.

Looks like they will be up north, where things aren't quite so hairy, though.  This will definitely free up some of our units for focusing on the counter-guerrilla fight.

Seoul to Send 3,000 Troops to Iraq in April

By Ryu Jin
Staff Reporter
The South Korean government on Wednesday finalized its plan to send an additional 3,000-strong contingent to Iraq to help U.S.-led reconstruction projects.

With nearly half of it consisting of combatants, ROK troops will work for Iraqi peace and rehabilitation, top Seoul officials said. The ROK contingent maintains an independent command taking charge of an area in northern Iraq.

``We have finalized our plan, based on public opinion, the U.S. request and results of on-site surveys, and the capability of our forces,’’ National Security Advisor Ra Jong-yil said at a press conference. ``The troops will undertake peace and rehabilitation operations.’’

Defense Ministry officials promptly sent a seven-member delegation to Washington to fine-tune the plan. Led by Lt. Gen. Kim Jang-su, the delegation will discuss when and where to deploy the troops. The Korean delegation plans to return Monday.

Officials said the troops will likely be sent to a northern region, like Cayara or Tal Afar, in April next year, but plans have not been confirmed.

``It would take at least four months to organize and educate the troops,’’ Defense Minister Cho Young-kil said, suggesting they would be sent in late April or early May. He expected an advanced party of the troops, however could be sent by March at the latest.

Cho added the safety of the soldiers would be given top priority in deciding the details. He said ministry officials expect highly trained forces from the Special Forces Command or the Marine Corps to comprise a defense team of 1,400 soldiers.

Some 100 civilians, including foreign affairs ministry officials, will also be added to the new dispatch.

The dispatch plan was adopted in a meeting of security-related ministers, over which President Roh Moo-hyun presided. The plan will soon be sent to the National Assembly for approval. South Korea already has already sent 700 medics and military engineers in Nasiriyah, southern Iraq.

The opposition Grand National Party, dominating the unicameral legislature with a majority power, has already hinted support for the government plan.

However, the Assembly faces strong opposition from the public. Hundreds of thousands of citizens have been holding protest rallies across the nation, urging the government to stop joining the debacle in Iraq.

Are they the Marines?

Why are they not going to the Sunni triangle? Did they think that posting heads on poles would make matters worse instead of better?

The last time we pulled our guys out of Korea, we got embroiled in a 3 year long war within months.  Neither the US nor the ROKs want us to leave Korea - and for the same reason we are now in Iraq - to insure regional stability.  Lord knows the UN is too ineffective to step up.

We WANT a forward presence in Eastern Asia.  THEY want us to have a presence in their country.  It is a WIN - WIN proposition for all parties.

I do not necessarily disagree.  But it made more sense during the cold war.   (Containment of communism and all of that.)   Do we ever pull out?

Not as long as China is still communist and willing to use force to "adjust" economic arrangements with its smaller neighbors.

Not as long as Kim Il is still trying to build missiles to nuke Japanese cities and the west coast of the US, to extort economic consessions.

I was stationed at Camp Kaiser, Korea with "A" Troop, 2nd Recon Sqardron, 10th Cav between 1962-1963. We had South Korean troops that served with us, "KATUSAs they were called" and they were all tough and dedicated soldiers.

The ROK Army or ROK Marines will be a big help for our side, they don't take any shit and they proved that in Nam.
