In another thread I mentioned that we live on a filthy swamp.  The past couple weeks the mosquitos here have been completely unreal.  You are swarmed with clouds of 30-40 within 30 seconds of leaving the front door (although I'm sure some folks here have it MUCH worse right now ).  I was taking the dog out to crap this morning and she was freaking out with all of them swarming around her head.

I've heard of some guys fogging their property to kill 'em, but I'd like to avoid that if at all possible.  We've got a huge population of mosquito-eating dragonflies, and I'd really hate for the mosquitos to come back and the dragonflies not  .

Do the traps (Mosquito Magnet, Megacatch, etc) work?  I've heard of people having major issues with breakdowns and hassle from the companies.  What else works?

Thanks for the link- that stuff sounds awesome.  Didn't even know such a thing existed.  Will try for sure.

killing the larvae, breaks the cycle

the mosquito delitos do kill lots of adults, but theres always more of them growing in tires and buckets

The buggers are a localized phenomena, if you can wipe out the locale acre population you might be good

unless theres a huge pond in the hood

I have read  permethrin sprayed on your yard will kill them. I havent tried it yet. It may also kill frogs and cats if you have any.

We spray our yard about once every two to three weeks to keep them away.  We have alot of bushes and shade.  Plus our neighbor doesn't rake his leaves and has a huge bamboo patch.  If it is dry you don't have to spray as much, if it rains alot you have to spray more offen.

We bought a 4 gallon backpack sprayer and it takes about 30 minutes or so to spray all the bushes in out 1.5 acre yard.  Cost is about $10 a month but well worth it.  Without the spray we can't get from the garage to the hosue without getting bit (30 yard walk).  Now if you are outside for an hour or so you will get bit once or twice at most.

Didn't know about frogs, but it will kill cats.  I personally hate all cats that are in my yard (And the scratches and paw prints on my cars, smell of cat piss, etc.), so it doesn't bother me.  Don't mind cats that stay in there owners yard, but I don't spray there......

http://www.stihl.com/isapi/default.asp?contenturl=/katalog/produktgruppe/420/Mistblowers.html

Get one of these, and spray your property with a little bifenthrin every few weeks.  I haven't had a mosquito sighting this year.

Damn, I thought I had enough Stihl stuff hanging in the shed. Cant you just mix it with water and use a garden sprayer?

Sure.  The stihl blower gets it EVERYWHERE and much more evenly.  As a bonus, you now have a leaf blower.  You can retrofit an existing blower, too.  The cost savings are significant using this route.

I hate nature, and I go to great pains to ensure it has no reasonable chance of disturbing my existence.
