I'm into road biking, and even if someone told me they would pay for the most expensive bike I wanted, I could NOT imagine spending more than 4K on a bike. I mean, I can BARELY tell what makes a 4K bike "better" than a 3K bike in any meaningful way - I certainly cannot figure out how an 8K bike is better than a 4K bike.

Maybe CAMPYBOB knows.

OMG - I have those SAME bike shoes!!!! Holy crap!! (although in my defense, I traded them for a huge bag of left-over halloween candy from a fellow bike rider last year, because they were too big for him, and he was a generous guy. I would never buy $250 bike shoes ).
Link Posted: 10/13/2004 10:15:57 AM EST
Well I've had a lot of expensive bikes over the years.

I just find it funny - a regular guy out on his $8k bike.
Link Posted: 10/13/2004 10:16:20 AM EST
i can't take four years of that!

GOD! your faithful servant requests you please let GWB win.

Serotta is a custom made steel bike.

I'm with you DK-Prof... for $4k, I could have a very nice Litespeed, Cannondale, or Trek.

he should really just stay in his house, home many more dumb pics of him do we need.

It will be a field day for SNL and political cartoons if he gets elected.

$8k? bout the only way i can figure out how to spend that much on a bike is to get a suzuki.

he sure is a man of the people

Its going to be a shitty four years whoever wins so...

Even better is the picture on drudgereport.com showing him riding with the helmet dangling from the left side of the handlebars, while he holds what certainly appears to be a cellphone to his ear with his right hand.

Great example for the children.

Helmets are a touchy subject, but hanging from the handlebars so that the strap can catch in your front wheel spokes is just reckless. Wear it, or leave it home, but don't set yourself up for a wheelover.

you damn straight, it is!

steel is real...and all that i'll ride.

I'm with you DK-Prof... for $4k, I could have a very nice Litespeed, Cannondale, or Trek.

keep your recycled beer cans and ti and carbon wonders...NOTHING to date has the ride qualities of steel.

kerry ain't racing the tour de france, nor is he climbing l'alpe du huez. for the...how should i say this? oh yes!...the REGULAR GUY steel is an optimum frame material.

btw, serotta builds a very sano frameset.

I with you - I'm all over steel.

But for the kind of rider I am (and I'm sure the kind of rider Kerry is), I don't think I could tell the difference between a 4K bike and an 8K bike.

For 4K, I could get an awesome steel bike made by de rosa, or pegoretti, or pinarello, etc - and there is no way I could perform any better (or even feel a difference) with a MORE expensive steel bike.

I don't begrudge the guy the opportunity to throw away his money on whatever he wants - I'm just saying that I couldn't tell the difference, and so I would consider it a waste of money. I'm not saying there isn't one, and that it woudl be a waste for someone like you - but for an amateur (in every meaning of the word) like me, it woulc be wasted on me.

You pay a lot for that Serotta name. One of the attorneys in the office has one in mixed ti and carbon. I think he has about 8k in it.

www.serotta.com/pages/ottrott.html

I just ride along on my Reynolds 531 and 753 steel frames. My wife has the high zoot Italian Columbus steel frame.

It's better because k*rry is a He-Whore and ketchup queen paid for it.
He could have bougth a $2K bike and bought 30 $200 bikes for poor kids but Noooooo.

Campy, the issue is a "regular" guy doesn't show up to shoot skeet with a custom made Perazzi or a custom SET of Beretta SO-10's in each of 4 gauges...

To me, it would be like someone telling me he is a "regular Joe" but shows up to your shoot with an NFA transferrable Phalanx.

You know?

Also regular guys don't shelter their billions to the tune of a 12.8% effective tax rate...when that happens the "regular guy" gets audited.

A "regular guy" knows the status of his discharge from the armed forces...

A "regular guy" supports funding for the armed forces in time of war.

This is but ANOTHER item that adds to a persona, a persona which none of we, the regular guys, like much at all.
Link Posted: 10/13/2004 10:32:07 AM EST
He could be riding an old Schwinn Varsity and wearing a ratty pair of sneakers, and he still wouldn't be able to pull off the "average guy" BS.

i gues i'm not a 'regular guy' either.

for god's sake, stick to the issues. you'll look less foolish.

Ditto, I could easily spend 8k on a new Mountain Bike and would if I could afford it. You get what you pay for...
You guys are trying to make a lame point. Same point could be made of us who spend 10,000s of dollars on guns. --RR

dude...you and i WORK for a living.

kerry is like a...gazillionaire or something!

i drive a rusty s10 and your mustunk is a bondo-mobile. wanna bet kerry has a little nicer cage, too?!?! heheh!

You're right - and "mustunk" made me laugh!

I do agree that trying to make Kerry look bad SIMPLY because he has money and is a child of priviledge is ultimately self-defeating, because in terms of how much money they have, and how easy they've had it - I don't really see a difference between the two.

I have no idea how much of Bush's "down to earth" image is just carefully managed and staged. He clearly is as much a child of privildge and wealth and connections - and trying to differentiate the two candidates based on that is as silly as comparing their wives. (In my opinion)
Link Posted: 10/13/2004 10:37:36 AM EST
Er..........Sorry but there is something fundamentally wrong about a eight thousand dollar "BYCYCLE".

I'm curious what the raw cost is. Heck, even toss in some for engineering. Does it fold up to fit in your backpack? Because I wouldn't leave it chained to a park bench.

There has never been a 'regular guy' president.

Hell if my girlfriend found out that some great aunt Lulu died and left her a gazillion dollars she'd probably get me a Porsche, a custom 1911 and an M16-none of which I have the skills to use properly, but this is America, buying cool shit if you have the money is okay.

W didn't exactly live a life of financial hardship either, but if I took him hunting this weekend we'd have a riot, politics aside I can't imagine having to even spend an afternoon with Kerry. Being rich isn't wrong, being a worthless liberal piece of shit is.

The difference lies in this...Kerry attempts to portray himself as a "common man". Common men drive pickups, own 1 house, drink cheap beer, eat pizza etc.

President Bush, while not having finanacial difficulty growing up owns and putses around on a ranch, he drives an F-250, he wears a Stetson etc.

Nobody NEEDS an $8000 bike.

Where have I heard that line of thinking before?

Don't know who I respect more, a man with an overpriced luxury bike, or a man who can't even ride one ...

I've ridden most of my life and I still have some great "yard sale" style bike crashes. Lets not play the game of trying to tell us that a fighter pilot isn't coordinated enough to ride a bike, or that a man deserves less respect because he wrecked while on a bike.
Link Posted: 10/13/2004 11:36:31 AM EST
I have to put my 2 cents in here. I own a Bike shop that sells Serotta. The bikes are custom made for each rider. The person is sized for this custom frame in a fitting that takes about 1 hour. The frame is then made to fit that person in all ways to achive a perfect fit. All tubes are custom butted and drawn for the weight, ridding style, level of comfort, and handleing that the rider is looking for. This bike is not for everyone in the world. The people that buy a Serotta are bike nuts. Just like most of the people here. It is a hobby for them and I know of riders that will put 10,000-15,000 miles a year on a bike. I own one of Serotta's top of the line bikes called the Ottrott it is a mix of carbon fiber and TI. I can tell the difference between a $4000 production bike and my custom Serotta. I also have 16 years on a bike and log 8000+ miles a year. Keep in mind I own a bike shop and my bike is used to get customers excited about buying one. It is built with the best money can buy NOW I RECOMEND YOU SIT DOWN retail price $13,000.

The last thing is this does not change the fact that Kerry is a JACKASS

One of my neighbors rides the same make and model of bike that Lance rode a couple of years ago to win the Tour de France. I can't remember the exact price, but it's around $5k or so. Whatever. He probably thinks I'm nuts for carrying around a $500 pocket knife.

Wait a minute... Why shouldn't a guy own a $500 pocket knife? Nothing wrong there, but no one needs a $5,000.00 bike made for riding in front of French ingrates, when all you're doing is touring around Texas.

First off, I hate Kerry as much as the next gun loving guy but I see nothing wrong with having a $8,000 bike. I have a $3,000 mountain bike and I am pretty sure that Kerry has a hell of a lot more money than me. What do you want him to ride? A $100 huffy from Wal-Mart?

I ride a $2,500 bike.

And I'm worth about $80 billion less than Kerrys "ride."

Stick to IMPORTANT issues - like Kerry looks like a dork while on his bike.
