NEW YORK (AP) -- A group of Hurricane Katrina evacuees staying at a Queens hotel want it to contribute $2,500 to each family as an incentive to move, but the hotel's owners are questioning their obligation to pay.

Charlie King, a lawyer and a Democratic candidate for New York attorney general who was involved in a meeting this week on the proposal between hotel management and community leaders, told The New York Times in Saturday's editions that the money also would help cover costs for families seeking permanent housing.

The owners of the hotel, Radisson J.F.K. Airport, are expected to meet with the families' representatives on Tuesday.

"What the hotel is wondering is why private citizens are coming forward and asking the hotel for things that are FEMA's responsibility," said Marc Leffman, chief executive of Atlanta-based French Quarter Hospitality, which owns the hotel.

About 30 families remain at the Radisson, the last of about 120 Gulf Coast-area families who arrived there after the hurricane. Their rooms are being paid for by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Many of the families who have left the hotel have relocated to city-managed or permanent housing, or to other hotels in the area.

In January, the Radisson's managers told remaining evacuees that they would need to find new housing by the end of the month because of a scheduled $7 million hotel renovation. That led to a protest in which the Rev. Al Sharpton threatened to boycott the hotel if it forced the evacuees to leave.

What a great country we live in. Just ask someone to pay your way in life. If anyone is interested, I would like someone to:

1. Finish paying off my house.

2. Pay for my kids' college education and weddings.

3. Pay my taxes for the next 10 years.

4. Set me up in my own business with a zero-interest loan that is subsequently forgiven.

5. Provide free limo service to me and my family to get around town.

6. Cover my living expenses (e.g., food, clothing, shelter) for the next 60 months just because I asked.

In return for the above, I will not say anything bad about the people making the payments, other than they are rich SOBs and don't need the money anyway.

These people are used to being paid to move out of free housing.

Before the oil crash in the 1980's, when New Orleans East looked like it might be the up-and-coming part of town, a couple of really nice apartments were built for executives in town long term on business. After the oil bust, these apartments were turned into low rent government housing.

In less than 10 years, the new tenants of these once high dollar apartments had damaged them to the point the buildings had to be demolished. The city told them, "Hey you gotta move, but here are the directions to your new government digs." Predictably, they pitched a fit.

If I remember correctly, each family ended up receiving $1000 for moving expenses.

Enough is enough. many of these people are high school graduates in good health between the ages of 17 and 32. If they really want uncle sam to pay thier way for the rest of thier lives, it is only a phone call away. Of course that is too much like earning a living, and why would you do that when you can live at the Raddison for doing nothing other than being from NO.

The sad part is that many of these hotels took these people in as an act of kindness. I would be willing to bet that the Raddison normally charges alot more than what they get from FEMA for these rooms.

Are we one bit surprised? These people are expecting to be taken care of the rest of their lives for "relief efforts". This is just a bonus program in addition to their disability/welfare payments. Many hotels taht are housing refugees are also now suffering from high volumes of violent crimes, drugs, and prostitution. Even when confronted about their illegal activites and told to leave by the hotels, they will refuse and attempt to be squatters until they are escorted/thrown out. There have also been a few cases around Houston where good sumaritans invited refugees into their homes only to be beaten, tied up, robbed, and murdered.

Also of interest that businesses in the Gulf Coast LA area are dying for emplyees! They are paying above average wages and many are giving bonuses! Burger King is giving a $1500 hiring bonus! Many bonuses cannot operate fully or at all because people won't work or come back to work and rebuild their lives. In contrast however, the casions reported higher earning this last quarter vs the same quarter last year! I wonder where the extra income came from, payments to refugees?

Got to stay in one of the hotels (Holiday Inn north – Atlanta) last year due to catching a flight the next day for overseas. This place had welcomed some of the evacuees, and witnesses the following conditions first hand and never again.
1.Chicken bones laying all over the sidewalks couldn’t even roll my luggage without having to run the obstacle course and dragging the wheels.
2.Mattress’s laying outside along the rooms appeared to be airing out or there’s a lot of bed wetting going on in the evact population.
3.The noise and partying going on at all hrs of the night didn’t get much sleep and was glad to get out the next mourning.
Tip. I learned while traveling into this shithole is not to expose your cell phone, individuals will come up and ask to borrow it, saw it more then once at the hotel and airport.
