According to TheTimesOfIndia.online, it's being reported locally that troops of the Northern Alliance has taken the crucial airport near Kandahar from the Taliban! Kandahar airport falls to opposition: Tribal chief QUETTA: The strategic airport outside the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, powerbase of the fundamentalist Taliban, fell to opposition forces on Tuesday, tribal leaders said. "It's confirmed from tribal leaders," Mohammad Yusaf Pashtun, spokesman for former mujahideen governor of Kandahar Gul Agha, said in this southwestern Pakistani city just across the border from Afghanistan. "They don't know who took it," he said. "Kandahar airport has fallen in the hands of the Northern Alliance," Qatar's Al-Jazeera television said in an unsourced report and without further details. Al-Jazeera television reported aobut the incident early on Tuesday. "Kandahar airport has fallen to the Northern Alliance Forces," the Qatar-based satellite channel said in a report immediately denied by the Taliban. However, the station's correspondent in Kandahar later clarified that it was "not the main airport for Kandahar". The captured airport was deserted and located 50-70 km outside the city, close to the border with Pakistan, the reporter said. "Kandahar airbase is still under our control and there is no problem," said a Taliban spokesman, quoted by the Afghan Islamic Press. Al-Jazeera had earlier reported hearing firing to the northwest of the city. "Shooting carried on for 15-20 minutes," the correspondent said. "May be they have already arrived," he added, referring to the Afghan opposition, which has swept down from the north backed by US air strikes. The correspondent said the city was tense during the morning and military roadblocks had been set up in several areas. Opposition forces seized the capital, Kabul, at dawn on Tuesday. That's good, force all the taliwhackers back to one location. Makes it that much easier to bomb them.
