Is there a market for old, used Mode C transponders, like in Rangoon or somewhere?

I sold our KT76a with tray and encoder for a couple hundred (I think, could have been a little less) on eBay last fall after we upgraded.

I looked on eBay and apparently what I've got is going for $500-$600.

Who the heck is buying these things? I mean, I'm happy to sell it for that, but I'm quite surprised that anyone would be in the market for a non-Mode S unit.
