He ask if this could happen?

I told him " I don't know son but it is possible"

He has been freaked out asking how much ammo we had, Food, battery's, etc.

He is one freaked out boy.

I told him if something like that happened go to grandmas ranch and arm your self.

I think that I should not have showed him that movie.

Its good to show children the responsibility/true parts of life. Most are sheltered and never shown it. I watched it when I was 7.

Is he a member of an elite paramilitary organization?

its a good film. My dad did that with me, but instead he had me watch apocalypse now followed by platoon when I was 8 years old.

Red Dawn is a great film, but I hate to say it, but it could of been more realistic. That band of kids would of been fucked.

My uncle showed me the movie when I was ~10.

I thought and asked the same questions, no harm done, Im not scarred, just prepared.

I was about his age when I first saw it (in the theater).

The movie changed me for life....

Probably a big reason why I am here with y'all.....

Congrats dad, another ARFcommer is born....

Nonsense. Prepare him for any bad times ahead.

I showed it to mine when they were little back in the late 80s and early 90s.

Made them wake up. They're aware that there are wolves and there are sheep.

UM, HELLO?

Red Dawn is rated PG-13! (In fact it was the very first movie with that rating)

What are you doing showing it to a 12 year old?

Next movie to show him?

TANK

Growing up I think I saw both Red Dawn and TANK over the same weekend, not sure if my parents brought them home as rentals or what. It could possibly explain why I own as many guns and as much ammo as I do. Being born in 1977, I was significantly younger when I saw that movie. Probably saw it around 87 or maybe even earlier.

When he asked If that could really happen, you

should have said. Of course if your truck overheats

you can piss in the radiator
Link Posted: 6/15/2009 5:41:50 PM EST
It could have been worse, and been "The Day After" or "Threads"...

If you want to fuck a boy up, that's what you show him.... Or let him find on his own on late night cable TV. Red Dawn, hell, if you ran far enough, were quick enough, or a good enough shot, you could live.

Day After or Threads, where were you going to go during nuclear winter, or hide from the radiation? I had nuclear war dreams for years over those movies.

Just wait a couple years till you show him "The Day After."

Did you tell him the same thing when you watched "Jurassic Park"?

Technically that "could" also happen.

Red Dawn is a good movie for boys to watch, but you shouldn't freak out the kids.

what an awesome movie, every boy needs to see it

Of course. Why should a parent decide when his child is ready to see a certain type of film. Better to let the MPAA and the .Gov do it for him.

Just make sure he doesn't make it to Eagle Scout. Hell, I plan on showing my son that movie when he's about 10 or so. Full Metal Jacket too. It's just...guy stuff.

Maybe this will help instill something good in him that will help him for the rest of his life.

You're not scared, just prepared............ Or are you not scared because you're prepared?

Either way, it's a good way to be. I think I am both.

Show him The Grapes of Wrath next. It will make anyone understand the importance of preparedness and having a Plan B. An awesome movie !!

I was around 12 when i saw it, as my grandfather had always put it in our heads that if things got bad in any form, we were to go to the woods. Then i saw this movie and was like "this is awesome!", my papaw is right!! So around 12 if i think he is ready i will show it to him, last thing i want to do is scare him like "The Day after " did me when i was 8.

I think you shouldn't have told him its possible. Good god man.

That type of scenario is extremely unlikely. And while I am all for preparedness - freaking out your kid does nothing. I would have said "Probably not - it is very unlikely. But if it did we would be ok."

I actually agree. Many unstable nations have nukes now. They would just nuke the shit out of us then wait until the fallout passes and then invade.
