In it the good guy was cutting 12 gauge shells so when they were fired the entire front 2/3rds of the round broke away from the rest and pretty much became the worlds largest Glaser Safety slug.

Anybody ever try/hear of this?

Yup, I've seen that done. Works pretty well, but it's usually a bitch to chamber a subsequent round.  neat holes in plywood, though.
