Because they have armed guards who need to qualify is my guess.
They also have teams, sort of like SWAT teams, who need to train. |

Security of assets.
Labs, material, sensitive data centers and the like. I'm pretty sure the DOE has some nuclear facilities for research purposes. It's a good idea to protect those. |

DOE employs the security guards at the Hanford site in WA, among others. A couple of them are in my Guard unit. They actually get pretty good weapons training.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA  Yeah, A-Merc has a reputation......but it isn't excellent! Try searching any reloading forum for people's views about A-merc brass. It's out of spec and poorly hardened. |

A better question is "Why American Ammunition?". That ammo is generally regarded as crap. They definitely were the lowest bidder, that's for sure. I really hope is for practice/qualification only.

Because Jack Bauer (and Chuck Norris) wants them to have it.
Lots of nuke security. They supervise the nuclear weapons stockpile. 16,000 federal employees (about 20 rounds each  ), 100,000 contract.

The Federal Agents in DOE get GREAT training. The ones I met trained almost full time, and at Gunsite, Storm Mountain and several other top notch facilities. They are some serious dudes. One showed me the callous on his second finger from the gap between the grip and trigger guard on his M4A1. There are sworn Federal LEOs in DOE, and contractors. The former are guards for actual weapons, the latter guard materials and waste. |

To my understanding they use Gunsites doctrine, not military carbine shooting doctrine. No SPORTS for them! I got a picture of me shooting a DOE M4A1. DOE 5.56 is streaming out the ejection port. Damn those guys were cool!

Actually at the nuclear weapons sites the guards are contractors from Wackenhutt security. They have all sorts of neat toys including full auto weapons, blackhawk helicopters, belt feds, you name it. And they have Federal arrest powers on the grounds and in the immediate area around the weapons facilities. I have trained with some of the glow-worms at Blackwater a time or two. |
