I got a summons about a month ago and my report date was today.

Got to the Saint Paul Court House at 8AM and sat until 11:30am. They started calling off group numbers around 10:30AM to leave for the day. The rest of us sat until 3:00PM and nothing happened.

Just called in and have to report by 9:00AM.

Bunch of bull shit.

Yup... get paid well below minimum wage, and no reimbursement for mileage or parking.  Sounds like fun!

I did and thought it was a very interesting experience.  I'd do it again in a second.  It ain't like Law and Order.

Trial by jury is the fundamental principle of western law.  Nice to see it's held in such high esteem.

It really burns my ass to hear people bitch about being too busy to vote or having better things to do than sit on a jury.

Think of the people that are going to depend on your descision. I hope that we don't get 12 people that are pissed about their jury duty in November when we're trying to put a rapist in prison...

I've served on many juries. I find each time the trial was very entertaining. Yeah I know.. The most serious trial I been on was that we sentenced a crack cocaine dealer to life in prison without the possibility of parole. I take no pride in sentencing a guy in his mid-30s to life, but as the old saying goes, "if you don't want to do the time, don't do the crime."

I did it a year and half ago, it was educational.   Saw the Judge issue 8 warrants for the 8 no-shows, saw some plea bargaining going on, and saw a few morons who really racked up huge driving citations (not DUI).   I would also comment is that court was NOTHING like it is shown on TV.

I honestly have no problem at all doing jury duty, but hearing stories like the OP's make me weary.  Just more government ineffeciency and bullshit from the sound of it.

I like the principle, but not the practice.

BTW, the only time I got a notice for jury duty I didn't even have to report, since you had to call in ahead of time to hear your final "directions," and mine were to not show up at all.

I had jury duty about 2 months ago.  I ended up getting picked up for a lawsuit.  Some lady had a minor fender bender with some guy.  The lady and her kids were alright and she still stopped by the store after the accident.  She never went to the doctor, only a chiropractor a month later.  She was asking for about $48,000 for lost wages and pain and suffering.  A few of the other jurors wanted to give her the money because they said if we didn't, it would be "like we were not acknowledging that the accident ever happened".  A few of us stuck to our guns and fought the good fight.  In the end she got her chiropractor bills paid for and a few dollars for her inconvenience.

It sucked hanging around for a few days waiting but in the end I felt good about sitting on that jury.

Too bad guys like you cant have the right to a Jury revoked. I think it would be awesome.
Folks never want Jury duty? Sign a  waiver. Only thing is, you forfeit ever getting one if you need it. You dont deserve the right.

ETA, upon reading more of the thread, it looks like you are going to do your duty, good on you.

Ok, I read up on this.  Jurry Nullification, but I'm still missing how you go about it.  It has controversy, but when can you use it?  When the state and defense rest and you go to the deliberation room, you say, hay everyone lets use Jury Nullification?    You walk back out and say hey judge, we nullify this law or verdict?  Explain in layman terms if you would, I'm a little slow......

from my understanding upon deliberating you would come to the decision that while the accused was guilty of the crime the crime itself is unjust/unconstitutional.

I think they should make people on the unemployment roles do jury duty. I had it when I was 19; gee how lucky in FL you have to be 18. I had three days of it. I easily got off of a criminal case by being an ex employee of the state attorney, but almost got stuck in a civil case. The civil case was going to be a long one and this judge just didn't get it that it would of being a ridiculous inconvenience on me. At the time I was about to start another term in college the case would of went through 3/4 of the term along with a good chunk of my current term, and furthermore I didn't even know who some of my instructors were. If you didn't think that was a bad he wanted a women to reschedule her chemo therapy treatments around the case, which time wise would of been impossible. A sailor who was about to go on deployment was asked she could forward the name of her CO so that an agreement could be met with her being on the jury for several months.

My best interpretation of jury nullification is when the judge simply ignores the jury and imposes a directed verdict of not guilty. The judge has wide power in court, they can even choose not to convict someone. Few people outside of the legal world understand that conviction and finding guilty are two separate acts.

I have been on jury duty 3 times but never had to report, called in the night before and was instructed not to report.

my last time was a few months ago, and the week after my time was done we had 2 murder trials (one was a neighbor) and a stabbing, that is a lot for this hillbilly area, well they had to call another pool of jurors for these 3 trials and other ones going on that seemed to all start at the same time.

I was actually hoping to get called on one of the three main trials but it never worked out that way, I have no problem ever serving on a jury, I was the defendant in an aggravated menacing trial, it was bullshit dealing with my GF's (Wife now) Ex husband, I don't know if the 9 jurors wanted to be there but I am glad they were because I was found not guilty within 30 minutes.

I also learned that day that people you know CAN be on your jury because I knew 3 people on the jury, I learned a lot that day
