Back in the 1970s, I used to enjoy wearing jungle boots. Both the original sole and the panama version. Those boots are now long gone, but I would like to get another pair. What I don't want is cheap crap that falls apart.
Is there a brand made these days that is good, and where should I buy them? Thanks! |

You can still find 1980's manufacture USGI Jungle Boots on ebay. They're fantastic.
For current manufacture, I'd go with OTB Jungle Lites.

(I bought mine at "clothing and sales" IIRC) They are nice an cushy when you jump off of tracks to the pavement. Much easier on the knees. |

I was wearing mine when I bounced.
Flight of stairs and 2 goons on my back those boots saved my ankle from being shattered. |

I have a pair of the OD jungle ones from Altama, use those with my VN impression. Most of my footwear during my time in service (1992-2007) has been mainly Altama Jungle boots; very high quality stuff; resoled them at least twice with Ripple soles and they could hold a good shine. THen I went to Iraq and I used Altama desert boots and I was equally impressed; still keep the pair i used over there and fit me like sneakers.
Altama all around. |
|
Altama, definately! I wear them for work (what I'm used to) but they are getting harder and harder to find. The original ones come up on Ebay from time to time. But even there, it's getting more and more sparse.

Interesting. Too bad they don't show a size 13 like I need. Altama seems to be the favorite so far. |
|
Last pair I had I wore to a jobsite. Even with a retarded amount of polish, they fell apart in just a few days.

I always wore the green Saw tooth soled ones in Garrison, and regular soled boots in the field.
Always Altama. |
|
I had a pair in the 80s I bought at some Army Surplus store. They smelled like rubber, I mean they smelled like a tire. I don't know if it was the coating on them or the sole. It was so strong I had someone throw them outside when I was passed out at, er I mean spending the night at her place.

Wore the green ones until the metal plate showed through the sole-they were house slipper comfy.

Pair of altamas...resoled with vibrams and toe cup removed. Like tennis shoes...
Are you sure you need 13s? I wear 13 in running shoes and most "civilian" shoes...but in jungles I wear 12s (11.5 in the new boots...) |

My old ones were 12s, and unlike when I got them in the mid 1970s, by the time I stopped wearing them, they were seriously too tight. |

Size wise, the older Jungle Boots were kind of large to accommodate swelling feet in hot climates. I still have a few pairs at home left over from when we still wore black boots. One has ripple soles and the other is the Panama style.
|
|
If I recall correctly, my old ones were made by Rosearch (?).
|

I had a pair back in the late 70's. 1960's issue with vibram soles. I never liked the Panama sole.

Quoted: The all black ones are just a little too TactiCool for me. Does anyone still make the green fabric version anymore? I don't think I have seen anyone with those in a while. ETA: Disregard. I just noticed in the Altama link posted above that they still do. |
|
Last time I saw mine they were painted blue and hanging from a powerline near the 4th ID water tower in 1996.

Agreed. I've had a pair of Altama Jungle boots(Vibram Sierra sole with cushioned mid-sole) for close to ten years now. Extremely comfortable with a cushioned step and well made. They have been my "outdoor" boot for about as long as I've had them. ETA: Yikes. I just saw they want $135 for the style I have(3LC, but mine are OD). I was given my pair. |

Danner striker gtx. Most comfortable boots I've ever worn. Better than most tennis shoes. Side zip is real nice when your tired,
|
|
I like them, getting hard to find, I have 3 pair stashed away, bought them when I found them in my size and selling for around $15-$20.00. Was talking to one of the surp dealers last weekend, he said the last lot that went up for bid went for crazy money.

I still have a pair I was issued in 1990 in Panama.....in my footlocker....
|
|
i remember being told way back that the first issue ones had soles that looked like bare feet to confuse charlie. to this day i don`t know if its true or not, but i always thought it was a cool story.
|
|
Still rock the pair I had when I got out in 2004. Altama's will last FOREVER.

I'm not sure if the Altamas are built to MILSPEC any more. I remember an ad in the Brigades catalog about 10 years ago that stated their current Altama stock was NOT milspec and didn't have the spike protective soles.
Fast forward to about a year ago. I remembered I gave my dad a spare pair of new USGI green jungle boots in the early 1990's. I asked him whatever happened to them and he said "they are still in my closet". Five minutes later I had a NOS pair of green jungle boots that still had all the hang tags on them. It is the closest I've ever been to going back in a time machine. Anybody tried the Moore Militaria repro boots? |

I really wanted to buy these: http://www.batesfootwear.com/US/en-us/Product.mvc.aspx/9389M/0/Waterproof/Mens/M-9-Gore-Tex-Side-Zip-Boot?galleryId=G-F
But I've been pretty happy with these: http://www.batesfootwear.com/US/en-us/Product.mvc.aspx/9391M/0/Waterproof/Mens/8-inch-Water-Resistant-Tactical-Sport-Boot?galleryId=G-F Except they're now 3 years old, won't hold a shine, and are falling apart. But they're still much more comfortable than the generic combat boots and jungle boots I've had. I think when I upgrade, I'll go with the Oakley Standard Issue. |

I've got a pair of new old stock USGI jungles in 13.5 that I got off ebay for $12 or so. Use em as my woods boots, they are great

The $30 ones on E-Bay (& that are found in a lot of surplus stores) are made in China crap.
