It appears that this 4th of July the South is under attack again by liberals. This flag will fly in my yard tomorrow.

My great grandfather was there as was his brother and a cousin. Their cousin died in the siege, but they made it all the way through the war to go home to Illinois. Old Glory will fly at my house.

So let me ask you a question. As gentlemen can we not honor the fallen on both sides of this conflict and move on?

My great great granddad was wounded and captured while defending Vicksburg. He was later released in a prisoner exchange and fought the rest of the war (survived).

Heard that for many years Vicksburg did not celebrate the Fourth of July.

I'm much more sympathetic to the average Joe than the masterminds. All throughout history it's been the little guy who's been the pawn. I doubt our ancestors set policy.

According to the museum display in the old Vicksburg courthouse, it wasn't until world war 2.

Logistically, it had to be done. Taking Vicksburg sealed the fate of the Confederacy and everyone knew it. It's only because of Gettysburg that the siege and long battle doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Looking back at all the hardship and seeing the obvious that even Pemberton saw I wish they had surrendered sooner.

This goes back to my previous comment about the leadership; the writing was on the wall and everyone saw it. The South was lost and yet people were doomed to continue fighting. Needless death and needless suffering. Yes, I mourn all of the losses. May we never go through that again.

Only a great grandfather?  You must be pretty old, unless he was an infant.

They had them there off and on, big and small, but none were ever formally recognized by the city till 1941...78 years.

I'm not young, but yes, my great (only one great) grandfather. My father was the ninth child of an eighth child. (I have a "frisky" heritage!) Wm. A WindKnot was only 24 at Vicksburg. My grandfather was born in 1887 and my dad in 1929. It works. The insurrection is not that far removed from many Americans. Not so much a "history lesson" as still a family event.
