Judge Dredd returns to the silver screen

'Futuristic neo-noir' action flick promised

Those of you still recovering from Sylvester Stallone's 1995 interpretation [1] of Judge Dredd will have to wait until 2012 to see if Karl Urban can make a better hash of bringing the classic 2000 AD character to the silver screen.

Shooting on IM Global's $45m Dredd is set to kick off in South Africa later this year, and the company has just announced that Urban will be joined by Olivia Thirlby, who'll play "telepathic rookie cop" Cassandra Anderson.

IM Global teases: "Dredd takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot - if necessary.

"The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring Dredd to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra's revered comic strip."

The word on the street is that this time around, Judge Dredd's helmet will remain firmly on his head, as is only right and proper.

I could see myself enjoying something like that

This is why I don't watch TV anymore, nobody has any original ideas left.

But at least this has potential.

The Expendables was great, certainly nothing about that was original.

They can rehash has been trash all day long, but they refuse to shoot another Bond movie.

Okay.

Well I hope they at least pick Rob Schneider to be the comedy relief again!

A remake? Does Hollywood still do remakes?

The previous version was absolutely dreddful. They can't help but make this one better than that abomination.

Judge Dredd is second only to Dr Doom as my favorite comic book character. The Punisher is third.

Speaking of which, no comic book character has ever been treat so badly by Hollywood as Dr Doom. Stallone as Dredd pales in comparison.

It won't take much to be better than the 1st one Rob Schneider in a movie = fail

I wonder if they'll use the dreaded "Double Whammy" again?

As if the FIRST one wasn't fucking HORRIBLE enough.

Okay.

They've made a mess out of Bond. IMHO.

It needs to stop being about product placement and more about the content.

I'll probably watch it. It can't be any worse than the original.

I wish they'd remake Starship Troopers.

Oh, God. Oh, God, no.

If this comes to fruition, it can only mean one thing: Rob Schneider will be on TV. All the bipartisan work that has been done over the years to erase this fetid scourge from the airwaves will have been for naught.

Please, for the children, don't.

No kidding. With exoskeletons and everything.

The movie basically was just world war 2 in space.

I'd wish they'd remake Terminator Salvation-but more like the opening scenes from Terminator 2.

God that movie sucked.
