Jordan parliament clears way for nuclear power

Sun Apr 22, 3:08 PM ET

AMMAN (AFP) - The Jordanian parliament passed legislation Sunday clearing the way for the small energy-poor kingdom to develop nuclear power, the official Petra news agency said.

Jordan is the latest in a string of Sunni Arab countries to announce plans to develop civil nuclear programmes in the face of the controversial programme of Shiite Iran. Egypt and the pro-Western Gulf states have already unveiled similar projects.

The new law "authorises the use of nuclear energy in the production of electricity and the desalination of water to meet growing demand in both areas," Petra said.

Jordan, which currently depends on imports for 95 percent of its energy needs, plans to bring a first nuclear power station into operation by 2015.

Power generation for water desalination is a major goal with the kingdom one of the 10 poorest countries in the world in terms of water resources.

Well that's a load.

Does Israel have hydrogen weapons, or are they just regular nukes?

It is possible to have nuclear power without the ability to make nuclear weapons.

It's believed to have @ 20 H Bombs and 400 tactical nukes.

Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Saudi Arabia. Tunisia and the UAE are also showing interest in nuclear programs.

Yes. Nuclear power in it's self doesn't get you a bomb.

It gets you the materials to make a bomb with, either through the means to enrich uranium or the production of plutonium. The knowhow comes from a broke Russian nuclear weapons expert you kidnap/hire. With out the expertise, all the enriched uranium or plutonium in the world won't make a mushroom cloud.

It's kind of obvious what they are going for. For a country with virtually no electrical generation capacity of it's own to decide its going to start up a nuclear power program is like a kid without a license deciding he's going to buy a Bugatti. Jordon and a lot of other countries are looking around and realizing the countries who are getting nuclear programs are getting a lot of attention from the US. That and they could get a couple of nukes out of it. It's leverage either way.

Nope, you buy the complete technology package from enrichment to the manufacturing blueprints for fully developed and tested bomb from Dr A Q Khan of Pakistan.

His Pakistani 'islamic' bomb was based on a proven Chinese weapon. He sold the plans to North Korea, Iran and Libya. It's believed he sold the information on to other states but the Pakistani Gov refuse to allow the US to interrogate him.

Pakistans nuclear program has an enrichment capacity far in excess of that needed for Pakistans domestic needs. It is belived that Pakistan is stockpiling warheads 'on account' for other Islamic countries, it's a given they are doing it for Saudi Arabia.
